If you had X amount of money to spend on a new (or new to you) boat, where would you put the priority on capital? Would you buy a smaller (if new) or older (if used) boat to make accommodation for the latest in electronics and gadgets? Think about it; going from middle of the road electronics to high end could add $4,000 for two units. A power pole is probably $1,500 installed. A BSX unit is about $600. A high end trolling motor is $1,200. All these things are powerful tools, but would you sacrifice on the ride to make room in the budget for them?

I was thinking the same thing, Jon. I never thought about it in that perspective. Factoring all those things in, it probably costs me $750.00-$1,000 every time I dump the boat in for 3 hours. I should probably own a float tube and a few snoopy combos.

I do agree with Ron though. Some purchases are certainly more justified if you fish more often and/or competitively.

OK - So what you are saying is $ per use?

Anybody want to buy a boat, lures, rods, reels........

Yes you could do without one I have but I wish I had one. I think my next boat will have atleast one.. for sure! As Tag said there are so many applications you could use one for, but I think you should fish a ton in order to warrant the purchase of one. I usually break down these larger purchases in how much they cost per use. example if the powerpole costs $2000 and you only use it 100 times it costs $20 per use. You now ask yourself is it worth it.
I have about $3000 in my boat over 4 years. I probably fish 50 times per year. So about $15 a time out on the water. I have said the same thing to other people. My boat may suck, but I don't have to work as much to pay for it.
Jon it makes sense, some people are willing to pay more $ per use than others. Everyone has a different level of what it is worth to them. I think I would gladly pay $20 per use for a power pole and others would say that I was crazy. I think this should be used as far as larger purchases that you may or may not need not the things you do need such as rods reels line lures. You have to have those in order to fish comfortably you don't need a power pole or side imager or camera.

Obviously the longer you have an item the cost per use goes down.

Maybe you should use a price as a percentage of your income factor instead.

Hey Sparky, not sure I completely follow your rant, but think I get the gist of it. I can assure you for $20k and a nice downpayment you can get yourself a great used tournament ready bassboat. hit me up at Sammamish on Sunday and I'll get you pointed in the right direction...which by the way is Nixons Marine and Jeff Priester....Best, Dave

Hey bro I just sold my ranger zx520 2003 for under 18k. It was a great boat, tournament ready. So see you can buy a great set up for a great price. This was the first boat I ever purchased, I got it for 28K 2 years old with 1.5 years of warranty left on the motor. There are great deals out there you just have to wait and pounce when the oppurtunity arises. If you want a new boat, I would keep an eye out for boats or boat certificates that were won during a tourney, most of the time the guys that win these just want to get rid of them and get cash in their pocket, they are usually willing to sale them for much less than you can get the same boat from a dealer.
I think the most bang for you buck would be to buy used especially when recreation is the main purpose of your purchase.

Sparky - Get in touch with Nick Barr. He is getting rid of his Legend for $21K, and he's still in highschool, so it can't be too beat up! He has it listed in the classifieds on this site. Sweet looking 18' footer with plenty of warranty left on the motor.
If you want to go new, you are limited to about an 18 footer with a 150hp. Look at Stratos as a best buy for this, but it's gonna be closer to $25,000. Used, I am always trolling craigslist.org. If you are willing to travel a state or two, there are always great deals on there. Priester is going to be the best guy in this state to buy from, but you are going to pay more than if you can find a private sale.

Also, Higbe at Anglers Marine in Spannaway has an 02/03 21 ft Cobra with a merc 300hp for $21000 that is really a nice boat. It's hull is very similar to a Champion 203. Super stable in rough water and fast enough at mid 70's. It's made by the same designer as the guy that used to design the old Champs. And if you ask around, no one will tell you those boats don't ride awesome. Maybe the best riding hull ever. Stop by and have a look at it.

I have seen Nick's boat also. It's pretty nice. It's just gonna be smaller and slower for the same money, and only a couple of years different.
Graham,

Did you see this opportunity? This boat was won at the divisional by the state team, contact Ken Day.

I don't even know what that means....

Why would you overlook Stratos? It's made by the same company that owns Ranger and Champion. Two of the best built, if not the best built, boats out there. The only thing anyone can say bad about them is that the finish is really simple and they need to be driven a little more than some other boats at speed. Otherwise, go to BassBoatCentral and see how many old ones are still out there. That is usually a good indicator of build quality. Stratos makes a really good boat that just isn't as fancy in the dressings as the other really expensive brands. And if you need testimonial, just talk to Mike Wolski about his.
One other thing to consider when listening to some of the people out there. Many of them have agendas. There are plenty of "pro staff" guys who want you to buy the same boat from the same guy as them because of kick backs and discounts that they get. You need to wade through the sales pitch's to get to the real information. I don't think that there is really a poorly made boat new at a dealership right now. Well, unless you go to a bayliner dealership. But, at least Force outboards went away!

Aaron, I don't know any guys that get kick backs or anything like that for selling a boat. I think only the salesman might get a small commission. I am a pro staff guy with a fully wrapped nixon's marine boat, and I will only tell someone my whole hearted truthfull opinion. No agendas here I am only trying to help another angler get what he or she needs or wants.

My truthfull opinion is that Nixon's Marine is the only bass boat dealer in this state. They have a fully stocked shop, so when something goes wrong you won't get the line "Well, we can order it for you" Jeff Priester knows bass boats and motors from the inside out he has been working around them his whole life. He told me he worked at Nixon's Marine when he was in high school sweeping floors. I don't know if there is too many guys in the whole entire state that know more about the boat business than Mr. Preister. On the other hand he has hired the best mechanic in any boat shop, Grant.

You might say I am biased but there are countless other guys out there from the entire West not just the Northwest that would back me up 100%.
