The article I posted earlier sparked a topic idea. Have any of you guys ever crashed your boat? How did it happen? What about hitting objects or birds?

I drive fast but I don't try turning much at high speed trimmed all the way up. I also don't jump wakes except occasionally by accident. So I have never really had an accident. I almost spun out once in my first boat by trying to crank the wheel all the way at WOT. Luckily for me it was only a 100hp motor so I wasn't going super fast.

haha i know someone in my club that crashed his boat a while back at banks, alot of people know who he is, Roy Van Slyke, he was runnin down in the south end and hit a submerged island and got the back of the boat all messed up, but after he got it all fixed he gained speed, great guy, great story.
I was with a buddy at Sammamish about ten years ago that had an OLD astroglass bass boat. One of those early 70's tri hull jobs with a 65 merc. It would run about 45 because it was so light. I just remember running down the lake at wot with another freind in the bow facing back laying down. We all of a sudden spun all the way around 180 degrees and sunk the back of the boat. About a 3 foot wave came over the back of the boat soaking us both. My freind in the front never changed position, he just spun around in one spot with the most freaked out look ever. I started yelling at the driver about being an idiot and he just sat there scared and confused for a minute. After we all calmed down, and him insisting that he didn't mean to do it, we started inspecting the boat. Turns out the steering linkage came off the motor causing the motor to make a sudden 100 percent left turn at wot.

Moral of the story, check your damn bolts back there because they come loose!!!! We got lucky.
Van Slyke has crashed or messed up more boats than anyone I know.
The guy is crazy. Runs through 6 plus ft willow lines at Pot Holes. Runs all out up rivers with known submerged rocks and so on. If you have never rode with him, it is a rush.
Lake Sammamish in 07. Hit a submerged log near the sunken forest and it threw me from the boat at 50mph. Hell of a ride and was thankfully not injured and the non boater brought the boat under control. He was thrown from the passenger seat into the drivers seat. 9k of damage to the hull. My best guess is that a tree outside the sunken forest bouy line shifted and is now just under the water line at low water. I had driven the boat over that line many times without incident. Now, I streer well clear of the area. I have gone back over the trail left by my gps and found nothing. So I either sheered it off and it's not visible or it was floating when I struck it. Either way I stay well clear of the bouy line.

Back to the original question: Hitting something while running: I was running down the Chattahoochee in Georgia in the winter time with a buddy when we hit a sheet of ice about 5-6" thick. The boat came up on the ice and started doing 360's at about 65+ and somehow my partner managed to get the boat off of it (How he did it ? I was still dizzy from the 360's) I couldn't tell you. It left 5 holes in the boat.

I think you probably hit a floating log or you were mistaken about the line you took.

I learned about barge wakes on the river the hard way. During a qualifier a few years ago, w my new 20i w a 250. going too fast, didn't understand the severity of the barge wakes, my co-angler was motioning for me to slow down, and I slowved from 70 to 50, then all of a suuden there it was the HUGE void right after a barge wake. I launched the boat, prop out of the water for a good 3-4 seconds, landed hard, and got very lucky nobody got hurt. Another boat said they had to look up to see my prop. No real damage to the boat, no injuries to either of us, but another boat had done the same thing, broke the hull, and the back (i think) of the driver. We were lucky, and I feel fortunate to have learned that lesson safely.

I'll 2nd that - Skeeter I Classes land like there on a pillow after going airborne.

Once on Lk Washington my buddy and I took off before light and we were going pretty slowly when a boat passed us. I didn't like that so I told Bill, "watch this" and opened it up. We went flying by the guy and were going about 60mph when I saw the silhouettes of some birds in front of us, Coots I think. One of the birds changed it's mind at the last second and turned right in front of us. There was a weird splash and wall of water that soaked both of us. About 2 minutes went by before Bill looked over at me and said "my face feels kind of oily". We both had some kind of bird oil all over our faces.
Uhhhh, are you sure that was bird oil?
