Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

"A recent study involving the voluntary ingestion of soft plastic fishing lures on brook trout found that discarded fishing lures could be having a detrimental effect on wild trout." This from an article in Internation Angler, the publication of the International Game Fish Association, citing research done by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. The Department is "strongly encouraging anglers to change from using the soft plastic lures to using biogradable lures to help protect the fish....The life expectancy of a soft plastic lure is over 200 years."

As much as I appreciate the concern for the trout, I am a bit skeptical.
Maine is a trout/salmonoid state, same as WA. Bass (in many states) are regarded as a scrap fish and those states that have a trout/salmonoid agenda via their state fisheries, generally, look for a way to eliminate the species. I am a small distributor and maker of plastic baits and for me to use biodegradable product is cost prohibitive. That effort could put a lot of us out of business. So, until I see an exerted effort to move toward biodegradables, I will stick with my plastic. However, there are some companies that are presently using and selling what is called a "green" plastic. It is being provided for manufacturers such as myself. Supposedly more eviromentally friendly but not sure how it affects trout, etc.
I will be doing more research.
Robert has hit the nail on the head about the feeling towards our fellow bass anglers in Maine. I have known a few anglers in Maine and have heard stories of how hard it is to get anything done to help with the warmwater issues.
Another pointless topic.... No offense David but come on...
Gosh, seems like noting research that demonstrates harm to fish isn't pointless. But, then I guess it sure could be.

My sense is that the harmful results of the research (conducted at Unity College) could be extrapolated into other fish species such as largemouth and smallmouth bass. Given the nature of this forum, that would not seem to be pointless.
Like my Mom used to tell me when I was a kid, " don't eat bubble gum because it will stay in your stomach for the rest of your life. Maybe that's why I'm an XL?

XXXL
I honestly couldn't decipher the intent of the guy who started the post but if it was to start a "green" discussion you came to the wrong place. We burn a fair amount of diesel, gasoline, and 2 stroke oil around here and none of us feel guilty about that or the fact that trout in Maine can't handle there plastics. We fish for bass and when one of them steals a peice of our plastic and somehow misses the business end then it shits it out later. Big deal!
i thought aboot using paper senkos, but instead i use reusable lures. the plastics i do use got much use, as they are often repaired with soft bait glue. the handles on my rods are cork, which is a renewable resource.
XL you jackasses. Or a slim XXL.....
XXXL, easy

I think we can "extrapolate" from your "senses" that you are a fag.
