Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

We held the WAFISH tournament on Lake Washington on saturday. The morning started with sub 30 degree weather and a couple of close calls on the icy roads, but everyone made it there safe. 28 teams came out to fish the tournament, which was run like most other tournaments with the exception of a couple of mystery pots; the first being the "weird fish weight" which was the biggest fish weighed-in that was not a bass, the other was a mystery weight of 2.73lbs for the number of members in the bass fishing group before the tournament (273).

Fishing was tough with the very cold weather. A total of 30 bass, 5 trout, 2 squawfish and 1 perch were weighed in. The top 5 weights for bass were as follows:
1st place: 5 fish-11.26lbs Gabe Lowe/Tom Librande
2nd place: 3 fish-9.38lbs Mark Maderos/Rob Maglio
3rd place: 3 fish-8.84lbs Henry Dover/ Jim MacDonald
4th place: 4 fish-8.04lbs Marc Marcantonio/Ron Hobbs Jr
5th place: 3 fish-7.87lbs Dez Ruffin/Phil Mehrdens

The big fish prize went to PJ Koshi for his 4.54lb monster smallmouth.

The top "Weird Fish" was awarded to Dave Sexton and Ron Langley for thier 3.57lb Squawfish.

The mystery weight was awarded to Willie Parsons and Pete Fisher with 1 fish weighing 2.54lbs.

The smallest weight was weighed in by Rodney Heupel and Jeff Iacchei for their perch weighing .35lbs.

After the tournament we had an awesome raffle, with a number of wafish members showing up who weren't able to come to the tournament. We probably had close to 100 people at the raffle. Congratulations to Ron Hobbs for winning the hawaii vacation!

Thank you again to all who came, helped setup/takedown, and especially to all of our sponsors who made the tournament and raffle a huge success. I look forward to doing it again next year bigger and better! The date is to be determined, but I am open to suggestions.

Here are a few pictures of the event. Much more to come soon thanks to Chad Simon and his wife.

Jordan , you ran the event like you have done this 100 times ! Hats off my man Awsome show indeed ! As for the ice , wind , and slow bites welll , thats just tourney bass fishing for ya ! lol We manage to put three fish in the boat , nothing special about what we were doing . Work on two rock piles in about 42 -43 ft . We never went past 90 all day ( thanks dear lord) all of our fish came on a 3/4 -1oz football heads...about 30 min into the start i did have ice forming on the rod guides , but a lil wd-40 took care of that with ease ! Had fun chating with the guyz and the raffle was an emotional roller coaster no dout !!

Great run event Jordan. It was also great to get to meet some of the guys from the website. Congrats to the top 3 teams for finding some fish. Even though I coudn't feel my feet for several hours I stayed warm and our team also caught the trifecta of fish 1 smallie, 1 trout, and 1 large perch. We had several fish slam our baits in 52-55 feet but they wouldn't commit to hanging on.
This was my first tourney attended, I was a spectator. Congratulations to all that braved the elements. Like others have said, it was great to meet others from the site. The raffle treated me well, I think i had 5 winning tickets out of 25 purchased. Came away from the day with some great conversations, met new people, new wardrobe and some stinky plastics :) - I hope to fish this event next year - watch out for beginners luck!
Great job on the tourney, it was a lot of fun to see so many bassboats on Lake Washington in December! It wasn't long ago that I would be the only boat on the entire lake of any kind, with the possible exception of a few trout trollers.

Ron and I really did have a blast! We really did load up on some nice trout dropshotting the bottom in deep water. Never did see a trout troller catch any, and you can't help but wonder what they would think if they saw all the trout the bass guys caught. The steelhead was a first for me on a dropshot rig, and Ron took a picture of it that I will share once I dig my camera back out of my frozen tackle locker. Yea, we had that squawfish beaten with any of our three trout, and we would have easily won the trout tournament.

The smallmouth bite was the typical light pressure bite, and we missed several fish that latched onto the tails of the snubs and pull them off when we set the hook. We used 3/8 ounce QuickDrops and nose-hooked snubs as Ron mentioned. Ron is a master with his four-pound test in deep water!

Although it was cold, both of us were dressed for it so it wasn't a problem in the least. I loved the water conditions and just wished we could have fished twice as long. It easily was one of my favorite days this past year.

Jordan, I hope that helped raise some well-deserved funds for the website. You ran a fun and well-organized event from start to finish, and Chad is to be commended for all his work, along with the other volunteers like Nick and others. Looking forward to the next event!

ciao,
Marc

No biggie Chad, Marc and I had a blast, our biggest accomplishment from the day was catching the triple crown of Trout, I wanted to keep them and bring them in for everyone to see, but I nor Marc payed enough attention at he drivers meeting for the weird fish. Marc caught a spawned out steelhead around 28-30" one cutthroat around 26" and I caught one Rainbow around that same size, I think that was am accomplishment in its self! We only caught 4 bass, Marc lost one deep about 5 cranks on the handle into the fight. We caught all of our fish on rotten blueberry colored snubs in 40-50' of water on 4 and 6 pound test.
I had a great time helping and fishing the event! It was great BS'in with everyone though I didn't get to talk to everyone. Congrats to the top finishers, great job out there! I stayed warm all day and that was a success in its own, just glad to be on the water with good freinds!

What's a 'photos section'? I haven't seen one of those on this web site. Got a link to it?

I found it, thanks.

I wish I could have made it. Sounds like I missed out. Hopefully we can have another Wafish tournament sometime in the spring or summer as well. Nothing wrong with more tournaments!
