Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Hey Fellas,
I have been thinking about BIG BASS. And my thoughts and research have obviously been drawn to Cali. We have all heard the stories of bass getting HUGE in California because they eat the stocked trout. Does the same go for Washington? Have any of you found evidence that bass eat trout in Washington State?

WHAT ROLE DO TROUT PLAY IN THE BASS FOOD CHAIN OF WA?

As in YUP! I do great on a rainbow pattern crankbait. Smallies and Largies.
Roboworm's Prism Shad color looks a lot like a trout to me. I am not sure if thats why bass bite it but they seem to love it. I have seen more than enough pictures of bass caught on 8" Huddlestons in this state to believe that bass eat stocker trout in this state. I would guess that any largemouth that is say 3 lbs or larger would eat stocker trout in a heavily planted lake.
Madd Bass baits is making some killer spinner baits and chatter baits, they can custom make the trout colors. Yes they work, the action is great too. They have a website and you can call direct for custom colors OR high mountain in wentachee has some of their colors too.
Any how, if the bass in CA like them...then so does the WA BASS.
Keep the bass fat! Bring more trout trucks (haha)
Give a rainbow trout swim bait a try just after a trout plant. The results would suprise you. Just think, a 6-8" SB that closely matches a stocker in color and size... sounds like dinner!
So lets say you are fishing a small lake when the trout stocking truck shows up and dumps them trout in. Is that called chumming?

what means that?

simple speak - the dinner bell
Hey Jon,
Thanks for your reply. I felt this was a topic worth bringing up because its not often talked about. Can you share your experiences throwing big trout swimbaits? I brought this up for many reasons...For one no one talks about stockers...Most have mentioned catching big bass on Bluegill swimbaits, Frogs, Jigs, Buzz Baits, Senkos, ect in our state but very few have mentioned using the BZZ, HUDD, or any other big trout swimbait.

I have also heard anglers say that trout dont act the same here as they do in California so the swimbaits techniques are not applicable here...what are your guy's thoughts?

To reduce predation the hatcheries have added a special chemical to the trout food that makes them taste bad to other fish. Largemouth will typically mouth one then spit it out and quickly learn that they are not edible and pretty much leave them alone after that.
Took the words right out of my mouth!

You are wrong Hobbs. Smallmouth cannot possibly fit stocker sized rainbows in their mouths.

Hehe....Although I'm not totally convinced that that size forage is something SMB's eat on a regular basis. I could be wrong though. Just seems a little extreme.

EDIT: this is not a fish I caught. I stole the pic off of another website that I thought of when I read this thread.

Joel that is not what your post says, you really don't ask for fishing advice but for a more of a biological answer. "Have any of you found evidence that bass eat trout in Washington State?" To me you got a ton of dumb answers and two it really didn't answer your post at all. They don't eat prizm shad roboworms because they think they are trout, are you kidding me a roboworm looks nothing like a trout, either does a spinnerbait or crankbait.
So to answer your post yes the Largemouth and Smallmouth populations of bass in this state prey heavily on trout whenever available. I have witnessed it in both species. Funny thing is they also prey heavily on stocked salmon as well, why not bring this up? Salmon are just as good if not better source of proteins and fats.
