good swimbait combo cost usually around $300 to $400
$100 rod is almost unheard of. IF you find one....$50 even more unheard of.

$120 rod + $200 reel is the lowest your going to see
Depending on what type of swimbaits you throw, you may be able to get away with something less expesnive. For smaller swimmers, like the 6" bbz, you would probably be able to get away with a shimano clarus extra heavy 7'6 flipping stick or Berkley Series 1 flipping stick with a Abu-Garcia 5500 C3 casting reel. The rods would run around 80 bucks and the reel would be around 60.

Certainly not ideal for throwing swimmers, but this would get you by.
Ok, I'm not a huge big swimbait guy, but I just got ahold of the new Lamiglas Excel 7'11 Heavy Action Swimbait rod, its SUPER Light, and really sensitive, with a 2 oz. rating and 12-25 lb. line rating. It'd be a great rod for swimbaits, and thats why I got it. It retails only about $110-120

For a chucking swimbaits reel, i'd probably just go with a round TICA Caiman reel, I have one and got it for $60, and its one of my favorite reels now, and I HATE fishing with round reels.
Ill look into that
I might try throwing the 6in bbz this year
I'm not a baller or anything, but I disagree. I found an awesome rod for $109 bucks....Matt Newman swimbait rod. Don't go with the heavy action if you get one..it's REALLY too heavy for around here in my opinion. Go with the Medium. There's my 2 cents :-)
If you are throwing anything with any sort of weight, dont waste your time with cheap stuff, you will spend more in the long run.

The Newmans have been known to break easily, do your research before you buy, maybe Newman has fixed the problem.
Okuma makes a pretty inexpensive swimbait rod and heard they were actually really nice... $109.99 at TW
Yup, Okumas be good. Thats what I have but they being replaced with Dobyns now, just cuz of weight.

FM,..I used the St.Croiz Mojo~Bass SB Rod with a low ratio reel for Swimmies before I upgraded 2 a GLommis 955 with a Daiwa Luna,..the Mojo handled the SB'S fine rated 2-6 oz,..I sold the combo to Anthony {tnj} so maybe hit him up and see what he thinks,..I purchased the Mojo at OE for $109.00 on sale but they aren't much more than that on TW,..maybe give them a look!

Sounds like an affordable setup. For the length of time you used it, how did you like it? What lures did you throw on it, and how did it handle fish? Now that you have upgraded {congrads by the way}, what do you think of your new setup? What do you plan on throwing on your new gear, and what line are you using? I planing picking up SB'ing very soon, and would like to hear from the veterans.

How long have you been SB'ing?
What lures do you prefer?
What rods do you suggest?
What lines do you recommend?
Do you recommend keeping the stock hooks?

Where should I start?
What lakes should I begin with?
What time should I hit these lakes?

Juan,..yes 4 the amount of time I used the Mojo it served me well,..I threw the BBZ-1 8" and the Tru~Life Blue Gill 7" allot and mostly Top~Water on lakes up north,..20 lb P~Line. I just picked up the Tru~Life Trout 9" which because of it's diversity I'll throw allot with my new set~up,..I love these baits cause you can cover the whole water column with 1 bait aslo the BBZ's are great and the Hudds,..also picked up 2 more 6" Weedless Hudds in Trout and Perch pattern,..they are a bit small but I love the concept,..just need 2 throw them more,..so far I haven't replaced any hooks and they all seem 2 be sharp and strong,..if I were just starting out with SB's I'd hit some shallow lakes and stay with Top~Water,..it's exciting and always helps with confidence when you can see your bait working,..you can give the Mojo a try and you won't be disappointed,..it has great backbone and a fast enough tip 2 throw your SB's a country mile,..JMHO~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~TGL~BB

How long did you use the MOJO setup for?
How well did it handle the BBZ-1 8" and the Tru~Life Blue Gill 7" and Top~Water?

I have been doing alot of googling about SB'ing and you seem to know alot! Hopefully I can lean on you when I have questions. By the looks of it you also have some broad shoulders ~ wink wink. What lakes did you hit up north? How did you do at those lakes? I dont understand how you can cover the whole water column with 1 bait. Could you please explain a little more so I can visualize what you are talking about. I want to pickup the BBZ-1 8" just like you did! I just read his book too! I think I am about to go PHSYCO! How big of a fish do you think I will catch on it!? How should I fish it? What lakes should I hit up north with it? Does the tip on the MOJO help you detect the bites as well? I havent caught a fish on SB, so I need to know when the fish bites.
