Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Fishermen are becoming more of a problem with the residents in the Canals. Here is partial correspondence between a few people who live in the canal.

Hello Dick- I have made contact with Dave R to discuss the 2k in damage he had repaired on his boat. Other neighbors have made mention of lures stuck into their boat canvas, chips on varnished teak
and actual collision damage. Loud talking prior to 8am is also a constant
problem.

I made him aware of my communication with the tournament participants and their commitment to shed light on our resident’s concerns. There has already been discussion at recent tournaments and
most of the anglers are very courteous.

Hopefully bringing continued awareness to the situation will help us all enjoy the waterway.

Regards,

My buddy doesn't really have any problems with fishing in the canals except for how loud some people are before its light.   I am going to talk with him and maybe get a few people from the fishing community and a few homeowners and the maybe whoever is the head board member in the Newport shores community to try to get everyone on on the same page and keep everyone happy so we don't have to worry about getting stoned when we go back there.

Any input?????????

You live in a park? Are you homeless Phil?

I live in Seward park and in the summer most of those big boats in those canals are parked down in Andrews Bay where they party all weekend and late into the night screaming and yelling and blasting there air horns. It sounds like their in my living room sometimes.Maybe Ill put a sign down on the beach that says NO PARTY BOATS.
I think it would be a bucket load of crap to make the canals off limits for "tourney anglers" ! This would proberly result in less participation for venues like NWBass also ..
So let me get this straight Mark , are you saying its cool to fun fish in the canals but if there is a tourney on the lake this area should be off limits ? and thats soley based on the fact that since you cant put 20lbs in the boat by way of the canals anymore there is no reason for any of us to fish it ? dude are you a Newport resident ? lol ...

I can uderstand the concerns of the residents , If i had a 100k boat on the lake and i had to endure the sounds excited anglers @ 7am in the morning and finding fishing lines on my props etc i proberly would be a little fustrated also..
However i would also have to take in consideration that if my House and boat is on a "body of water" that i dont own , Well thats No different than me living in a house next to i-5 interstate and complaining about horns and loud sounding vehicles that travel down the interstate on a daily bases .

So i stand firm in repersentation of "All Anglers" that by way of my fishing rights in the state of washington that if want to catch a fish in the newport canals i have right to so and if the residents dont like it , well DRAIN IT !! problem solved (or is it ? ) lol .. would the next complaint be there isnt anywhere for the residents to park there boats ? Welcome to the worst of both worlds !!!!!!!

I fished the canals the past weekend and all of the homeowners i encountered were nothing but kind asking how the day was going and how fishing was. I found that if you are kind to them they are kind to you as well. Try starting a conversation with them and you will be suprised. But the fishing in there was good last weekend. Our best five totaled 16 pounds
Medicare beach in the spring, got it.

No I am not saying you can't put 20 lbs. in the boat there any more. I just think that making that area off limits during a tournament would appease the home owners there to some extent. It would keep the traffic down when it is usually the heaviest in there. Plus it would give a bit of protection to a bunch of spawning fish that renew the resource.

The Potholes Bass Club use to make the Medicare Beach area off limits for thier spring tournament there. Nobody ever complained or did not attend the event because of it that I am aware of. I just think that sacraficing that water during a tournament would go a long way towards keeping that fishery unchallenged by the homeowners there. It would be a small sacrafice on the part of good anglers plenty skilled at catching fish elsewhere. It would be a good gesture on the part of the fisherman that I think would be appreciated and noticed by the home owners there. Thats just my opinion and you have every right to disagree. Differing opinions end up creating a compremise which ultimately ends up being the right thing in the end. Thats all I am saying......

What are we discussing here? Have the home owners of the Newport Canals been made the directors of Lake Washington tournaments? Is it ok to go in there because Rfatt's buddy says he likes us? Are they the only people on Lake Washington that don't like people fishing in front of their houses in the early morning hours? Didn't we thoroughly beat the crap out of this dead horse a couple of weeks ago?
It's just like gun control- give them an inch, they take a mile.

I just wanted to pass the email on. I don't want a big uproar with the homeowners and something drastic happen. I think the people that own houses there should have figured out what they were in for when they bought the house. Now beating up someones boat and yelling at O'dark early is not right and should be dealt with. All i want to do is get people on the same page and try to appease as many as possible. There will always be someone that is pissy about something but trying to make an effort.

I agree! I am also trying to figure out how I could damage a yacht with my Bass boat that has a rubber rail all the way around it and sits 1 foot off of the water. The only possible way I could damage one of those boats is to somehow have my motor all the way up and use my trolling motor in reverse on high and ram another boat with my prop. Anyways, they chose to live right on the water just like the people who chose to live right next to the freeway, airport, sewer plant, fairgrounds, and so on have to deal with other people.
Lets stop beating a dead Horse like Josh said.

I hear ya Mark for wanting to take the high road !
But dude , why do "WE" have to continue working around everyone else !! We practice catch & release , We are tourney anglers so i can safely say that our casting accuracy is slightly more efficient than most careless or carefree anglers that dont care about playing pin ball with there dropshot weights on boats .. My point here Mark is that the more we bend over , the more we will continue to get _ _ _ _ ! When does it stop bro ... Im done ! Btw im not upset with you Mark im just ticked that our time might be limited for fishing in there ..

Who said your time might be limited? The only difference between this place and thousands of others is the fact that somone actually knows somone who is upset about it. I guarantee there have been people upset by fishermen in various places for years the only difference is we don't know about it. I would rather not have the weekly update about the Newport canal home owners thoughts on fishermen because I don't really care. If the day comes when we can't fish it then we won't but until then it is a moot point.

Ok so my buddy just emailed me again:

Ryan- I'm now chair of our canal committee. Our last chair just left the neighborhood.

One of our neighbors made 2k worth of repairs to his 65’ boat. The damage was low scratches in the starboard bow area. He claims that bass fishermen routinely fish close to his boat and he is convinced that the damage was a result of that activity.

There have been no other reports of damage but I have seen guys get very close and even push off boats as the maneuver into the “perfect” spot.

As a long time salmon and stream angler, I get the whole concept. Wherever there is “fish” there will always be “man”. We just need to make sure that the property rights of our neighborhood are respected as much as the anglers respect their right to be there.

No problem meeting or posting communication. Like I wrote before, to most everybody on both sides of the water this whole topic is a non-issue. We just need to make sure that it does not turn into some big deal.

That pretty much wraps it up. Its not a big deal just trying to make sure it doesn't become one.

PS- the guy with the big boat knows it was a bass angler cause people fish by it all the time.......WOW I didn't know a low scratch could only be caused by a fisherman. I'm glad there is no debris in the water on Washington.
Is there any chance that the 2k in repairs to the hull was caused by the rust accumulation that I see on many of the boats in the canals that are moored in the water for extended periods of time? I am not saying it is or isn't. Just a thought.
