Frank, its funny you ask this, I have also heard both but have stuck with keeping it in the same direction it comes off the spool.
That said, my best tip is to spool your reels with the line as warm as possible. No I don't recommend blow torches, but I like to put the filler spool under a desk lamp or in the sun for a while to raise the temperature. What this does is put the line in a state of greater limpness and allow it to fill the reel spool smoother. Experiment with a chunk of line a few feet long to find the right temperature. Again you don't want so much heat you're changing the molecular structure of the line but just warming it up a bit..... as opposed to putting it in the freezer and seeing what happens.
Good luck,
Steve
The easiest way I found is to reel up the line for a few yards with the line dispenser on the ground, then stop and open the bail and pull down some line between the reel and first eyelet. If the line starts to twist around itself flip the line despenser to the side and reel up a few more yards. Stop and repeat opening the bail and pull down some line. The line should just hang down without looping on itself.
