Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I know this was covered a while ago, but I couldn't find it, or should I say am too lazy to search that hard.  I plan on building a new football head rod over the winter, and was hoping for some imput on blanks. I am leaning towards a Lamiglas blank, but not sure which one I should go with.  I want the best, most sensitive blank available.  Thank in advance!

I would strongly recommend the Lamiglas LMB 864 - This is a 7'2" XMG blank with a fast action, a little give to the tip and a solid backbone. I am confident you will be thrilled with this blank for a football head rod. If you're not, I will buy it off you, and I don't even get the chance to fish anymore.
My favorite is the St. Croix XC70MHF or the LEC70MHF. Both rods have incredible sensitivity. Both are medium heavy and have a fast tip.

I use the XC70MHF myself and love it. Really lightweight and a good back bone.
Thanks guys. Mike, I know the St. Croix's are good rods, but at I am looking for a little cheaper rod than the SCV blank, which is what I would get. I should also mention that I am going to be using this for 3/4-1oz. heads. I have a Kistler LTX 7' MH that I use for my 1/2 and 3/4oz heads now and I love the rod, but not the warranty. Tag, is that 7'2" Lamiglas a good choice for the little heavier jigs? I was looking at that blank and the 7' Heavy in the same line up.
Hey DJ,

This blank is perfect for 3/4 and 1 oz. heads with exposed hooks to moderate brush guard. I rarely run anything lighter than 3/4 oz. unless I am fishing extremely shallow water.

The only time I prefer the next step up in power is when I am running a heavy jig with the full brush guard for a little extra mustard in deep water.

DJ, tag is absolutely correct the 7'2" 4 power XMG is an awesome rod. However and ya Tag I know you'll want one :) ! I had Lamiglas make me some blanks this summer specifically for heavier football heads as a few of us were looking for the exact same thing you describe DJ. There happens to be three guys out of spokane that requested this so I had them made. These guys happen to fish FLW pro tourney's and will remain nameless as they are or were sponsored by loomis.

Anyways I had Lamiglas make 7'6" XMG blanks with a slightly faster tip than the off the shelf blank. They are considered a 4 power. They are awesome! I use the 5 power for 1-1 1/2oz and 4 power for 1/2-1oz.

I'd be glad to have you come over and check out the bank, FYI I have some other blanks you could see, and load to compare as well.

Hope this info helps-as there is a gap in the market for that type of rod. That's why I'm building them.

Thanks-Rick
Thanks. I appreciate the input. I have to have a split grip with no fore cork, it's just one of those things, so I will check them out. I would be interested to see what the cost would be for one of these Rick.

no problem Dj. Lamiglass are great rods also and I know Tag wouldn't steer you wrong.
I took Tags advice last year and had a buddy build me a custom football head rod with Lamiglas LMB 864 blank. I absolutely loved that rod, unfortunately it snapped when I set the hook on a fish last week=( And to top it off when I called Lami in Woodland last week they told me they are no longer making the XMG blanks so I cant make the rod again...I'm very bummed! What do you guys know about them discontinuing the XMG blanks?
I think I have decided to go with the SCV blank from St. Croix. After doing some research, it will be the more sensitive blank out of the two. It is a little more money, but since this is probably my favorite technique, I figured I should go all out. Thanks for the help guys.
OK, you have piqued my curiosity; what research showed the Lamiglas blank would not be as sensitive?

ciao,
Marc

Just reading posts from different sites. I am not personally all that familiar with the Lamiglas blanks so I don't have any personal data to back that up. I know the whole "sensitive" discussion can really stir the pot, with most folks leaning toward G-Loomis as the standard in this category. I however, have found my most sensitive rods to be the Kistler LTX's, followed by my St. Croix's and Rogues. People will argue this point until they are blue in the face, so I know it just comes down to preference. I have actually not ruled out getting a Lamiglas, and the price is better, so I am trying to keep an open mind. I know I would be more than happy with it, I just can't make up my mind. I am like a kid in a giant toy store that can only pick one item! I am however, concerned about them not making those blanks anymore. Do you have any imput on that Marc? Also, do you know how their warranty is on custom blanks? Thanks.
