Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I just got a Lee's Production Pot for christmas and plan on using it a lot while it's cold outside. I have lots of questions:

Has anyone made there own spinnerbaits?  I looked at a few molds online and there are several different styles from minnow heads to bullets.  Has anyone tried any of them and what do you like or dislike?  I would really love to make my own 3/4 to 1 oz monsters with big colorado blades.  Those big thumpers have always worked well for me, and they are not always easy to come by locally.

What jig molds do you recommend or not recommend?  I already have the standard football head, and will be getting a pencil style drop shot mold for sure (sorry Marc, but I'll still buy yours for fishing the rocks!) Or, if there are any other types of things you like to make that are useful.

What paint works best for painting heads that is chip resistant and has a good selection of colors?  Also, does anyone have any cool tips for doing custom paintjobs on jigs?

What tools have you found that you couldn't live without now?

Are there specific skirts you like better than others?  What about collars and skirt making tools?

Best idea for getting scrap lead?  The tire shops are hit and miss, and I would rather not buy it if it's being given away somewhere.  Part of the goal with this thing is to save a little bit of money in the long run without giving myself lead poisoning!

Any other info or ideas is also appreciated.  Pot maintinance, technique suggestions, ect.

Also, if you want to talk about anything else that you make from plastics, custom painted hard baits, or even hair jigs, I'm interested.  Let this be an open "lure and tackle making of any kind" thread.  If you want to post pictures of your stuff, all the better.

Totally agree with you Ron.  I said earlier that all you really need is a few basic colors, but I always mix colors to come up with something I like better.  I can never leave anything alone, I have to screw with it.  LOL.

If done right that is what happens, I have found if the paint is too thick it will chip if it is undercooked it will chip, when it does chip the jig has been through the paces and most of the time their are more teeth scratches on the paint job than chips when it does chip it is due time for a new one. I usually get base colors, brown, black, chartreuse and watermelon, with these colors you can make any color you need by mixing them to make green pumpkin, cinnamon brown, I like to use some chartreuse mixed in with my greens and it gives it a mottles apperance when cooked, I think the colors look better after being cooked and when mixed by yourself.

I can throw my powder coated football heads against the concrete driveway and all they do is dent the lead.  If you bake them at the proper temps for the proper time, they do not chip.  I lose them in the rocks way before they chip.  It is very important to bake them though, if not they will not last more than a few casts.  I just hang them on the racks in the oven.  I can do 75 or so at a time.  I also like some of the newer colors that they have in powder paint, although all a guy needs is green pumpkin, brown, and watermelon pepper.
thanks for the kind words Aaron.  The " what about me " is begging for some of Chris Lambert's spinner baits i never knew about. If Andy has a Lambert spinner bait in his hands before i do i will have a complete come appart and will have to dig out the 1-800 low self esteem hot line number !

Craig, isn't the vinyl paint just a dip?  I have never used it, what's involved in applying it?  The idea of poweder coating is cool, but it seems like it's a pretty time consuming process.

WCCT, What is a fluid bed, what is the purpose, and how does it work?  I know nothing about them.

Chris, thanks for the tip on the baby powder, I have never heard that one and will give it a try.

Dan, I think you have reached legendary status on your bait making skills, and everyone really appreciates all the extra sponsor work you do as well.  You are a major contributer to the sport in the North West.

Dan,

Don't worry...Andy doesn't have any of the spinnerbaits either.  Help me get Wave Away in with S. Brand and I will make you as many spinnerbaits as you want:)

something kind of trick i have done in the past is dip my footballs in salt water plastic. it really works well and seems to stay on. This way you can color them any way you want and is a lot less hassle than paint. I usually will use my jig until i get hung up and break off or have had to sharpen to many times. At this point i figure the jig is done but the salt water plastic has never come off the head. And if you are going to re-melt the lead you just peel the plastic off. I save all my jigs for re-melt. That is of course if i didn't break off.

I think the Banks draw down is going to produce tons of lead. And i bet you find some salt water plastic coated 3/8 footballs.

For what it is worth. I have used the vinyl on my "Chatter Bugs". It worked fine, initially, but I found that it will get soft and sluff off of the jig head. As a matter of fact it would really gum up. Am I over looking something in the application process? So, I decided to go to the powder coats and it has worked well for my baits, especially if I use heat as the final application to harden the paint as WCCT pointed out. It seems to make a big difference. However, my bait is designed to swim not bang off of the bottom or rocks, etc.

Danny,

It is good to know I am not the only one fighting the cold. We want to start production tomorrow but it was 6 degrees @ 7:00 a.m. However, we will just need to add another heater. I guess we are little tougher on the East side???

I hope all is well with the biz.

B

Well Andy better get some in his hand!

In all fairness, I was being sarcastic...

Hey Nick,

Thanks for the plug, I think. By the way, aren't you the guy I met at Three Rivers a couple months back?
If so, I do apprecitae your comment. You seemed to like of some of my stuff. In all fairness, I don't know everything but I do know a lot about making plastics. Don't overlook Dan Johnson, he knows his stuff really well also.

Just ask Bob Akers... He knows everything! You can even look at all his pictures, there are some new ones if his baits...
Maybe Bob, but it might be that we are just a little smarter!

You know Ron you may be right. It would be easy to get a brain freeze in those temps.

But, the biz must go on. I got guys back East waiting on product.

BTW, when are you heading down to Shasta? Are you and Johnny going together?

Good luck and success if you are.
