Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Hi everyone,

I'm new to competition fishing, and as much as I'd like to say I'm an experienced basser I'm not.  I've been fishing for them regularly for about 5 years now but still consider myself right between a novice and average.

Somehow I ended up with probably the worst gift at my clubs end of the year banquet this year.  I recieved a giant muskie spinner bait that will probably hanging on my boats dashboard as a decoration rather than ever getting wet.  I also recieved a package of pink slug Go's.

My question is about the slug go's.  I've never used them but after reading about how to use them wouldn't mind trying them.  But pink?  Does anyone have any success in the Northwest with anything pink?

I'd love to hear your guys thoughts.....

Hello Chris,

During the late pre-spawn, spawn and post-spawn, pink (bubblegum, merthiolate, etc.)  can be a very effective color for largemouth, even in extremely clear water.  I have hurt them pretty good on a few occasions in the past with a bubblegum Zoom trick worm fished weightless (only a swivel) in shallow water during this stage.

Pink is also one of my favorite colors for smallmouth soft plastics when I want to give them a different look.  Morning dawn, stinky pinky, etc.  They get a lot of bites.  I also like a little translucent pink in my spinnerbait skirts on a lot of occasions for both species.

Also, that musky spinnerbait might not be as bad of a gift as you think.  Just make sure you get the heavy gauge hook as sharp as you possibly can and fish it on stout line and tackle.  For night fishing and in stained to dirty water, don't be surprised if it produces your biggest largemouth to date.  I catch a lot of my big prespawn largemouth on heavy, oversized spinnerbaits with a large saltwater grub trailer.

Good luck!

I haven't used it much up here. I used to kill the Spotted bass with it on Lake Lanier. I will have to try it some up here if Tag says it works on smallies and spring largies.
Just to elaborate, I think since they are in a predominately territorial and protective state during the spawning stages, pink can be an effective "shock" color.

Thanks Tag!

That's exactly the type of info I was looking for.  Hence I thought it might have been a stupid question.  I thought either someone was giving a joke gift or there was something to the pink and the spinner bait.  I will definately be giving them a try now.  I might have to invest in another pole for the spinner bait though, lol but as most fisherman I don't think a guy can have to many poles.

Thanks again!

Does anyone ever fish slug-gos anymore? I used to use them with pretty good sucess about 10-15 years ago, but have become tougher to find. The little ones where deadly around the pads.
Try using your pink Slug-go's for sight fishing during the spawn.  I don't see as well as I use to so I have gone to brighter baits to lay in the beds. As for the big spinnerbait....take it to Mayfield and throw it at those Big Muskies down there. Good Luck
"There are no stupid questions ever asked, to not ask the question is what is stupid." To seek knowledge one must ask questions, read, study and experiment. To draw from an experts experiance will shorten your learning curve on the subject. There was a time when everbody was throwing Slog go's, then along came the Senko.  Throw that slug go, it is something different from what everybody else is throwing, it may be what the fish want and give you the edge. Confidence is the key, I believe Tag has installed some confidence in the bait and now you will catch fish on it.

I'm sure there is something to be said for fishing old baits that "nobody uses anymore."   Fish don't live forever, and so a bass that is 10 years old or less.....isnt going to remember the slug-go.  The old bait has become the new bait in some instances.  Fish it with confidence
Thank you everyone...I have a tourney at Ten Mile this March and will be trying the slog go in practice to see what happens....I will be tossing spinner baits too but I think I'll leave the muskie bait at home this time.
Ten Mile in March... Try a black and blue jig and pig, also try a crawdad color speed trap as your moving around fishing the jig and pig. I've had good results fishing both baits on the north and south lake at Ten Mile.

Thanks Marc,

Me and my partner, who is more knowledgeable than me, were just discussing the crawdad colored speed traps on Ten Mile this afternoon....
