Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Unfortunately, 2009 is the year that the County ordinance goes into effect in addition to last year's City Ordinance. For those that are not aware of the motor restriction, all carbureted 2-stroke engines (9.9 hp and greater) are now banned from Lake Whatcom. To be compliant, the engine must be certified and labeled as meeting the 2006 or later year United States EPA emissions standards as specified in Title 40, Code of Regulations, Part 91.

Since it was a City ordinance last year, the Sheriff's Department had no jurisdiction, therefore there was little to no enforcement. I spoke to the Deputy in charge of the Whatcom County Sheriff's Dept. Marine Patrol division yesterday to check my facts and they are in fact going to enforce the restriction this year. This involves being "terminated" from the lake and receiving a fine. The exact amount of the fine is still being determined at the Whatcom County Courthouse.

This is obviously a bummer but I wanted the anglers on here to be informed. I would hate to see someone's weekend fishing trip or tournament ruined by getting kicked off the lake and receiving a hefty fine. I will provide updates as I receive more information.

That sucks to hear,I'm kinda surprised. Lake Whatcom seems pretty large and it seems the
only time I see special rules is usually on smaller lakes.
Since Lake Whatcom provides the drinking water for tens of thousands of Whatcom County residents, there is a tremendous amount of scrutiny as you can imagine.

No more Darth Vader in Whatcom.. I knew it would happen sooner or later. Good thing I got the 3.3 hp on the lil blue boat, and the smallies are only a minute or two ride away. Tag, is your backseat big enough for me and Suzy Q ;)
You and Suzy Q are always welcome to join me out there, Chris. Plus, I would be honored to have Suzy-Q hand me a good old fashioned butt kicking out of the back of the boat.

With out researching does this come down to motors of 9.9 and higher to have at least a 2 star California rating?
Rodney, you are correct.

Looks like I'll be missing out on our club trny also. Guess I will either fish ABA Silver or pre-fish Banks for the Federation.
Thanks for the heads up Tag!
That's a good idea Mike. I might have to do the same. Banks should be fun mid june

I believe there are quite a few anglers in your club who have motors that comply with the current regulations. I'm sure they will let you guys team up with them.

Passing up Whatcom in June to fish Banks is like dumping Megan Fox to go out with Hillary Clinton. Just my opinion.....

If you have an EFI that is older than 06' and doesnt have the emissions sticker on it can you get an emissions test done somewhere? How will this affect older EFI's is what Im asking i guess.
