Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

This morning at 8:15 I looked out my living room window and saw my boat cover lying next to my boat!  It looked like there was a bunch of clothes piled in the cockpit.  I got closer and saw it was a tweaker who had wrapped himself around the heater I keep in the boat to fight off the dampness.  I called the cops, he took off, and I saw the fire extinguisher had been removed, the running lights were on the ground, the GPS antenna was messed with, first aid kit was opened, my battery charger was disconnected, and a few things scattered about.  Cop pulls up at 8:30, says they've caught a suspect, I jump in the car and yep, that's him. Two cops are going through his things when he mentions to one of them that he has needles in his backpack. That stops the search right there. We go back and inventory the boat.  The only things missing--a couple of fizzing needles.  As I'm trying to explain to the cop why I have needles in my boat, another cop pulls up to take pictures of my boat and any damage.  He happens to be a fisherman and explains to the other cop that nearly everyone who fishes for bass in Lake Whatcom probably has needles to save fish that have been caught deep.  The cops do some paperwork and leave.  A few minutes later a neighbor walks by.  She said the cover was on the boat at 7:50 when she walked past it this morning.  My thanks to Bellingham's Finest for the good work.

I finally found a use for my busted up broadheads.

My intern (recently returned from 3rd deployment to Ahganistan) caught a guy breaking into his car a few months ago and renderred some "street justice". The thief actually sprayed our guy with pepper spray twice before he went night night. I have been broken into several times and the thought of a thief getting his ass whipped brings a smile to my face every time.

Quick story about thieves getting what they deserve:

Over a decade ago, a friend of mine had his rig broken into a couple times at a parking lot located on a popular salmon/steelhead river.  Fishermen would park there early in the morning while it was still dark and hike a good distance to their fishing holes.  Rigs would commonly get broken into while the anglers were a long ways from their vehicles.

One time my buddy decided to take everything out of his vehicle and fill his glove compartment and center console with broadheads.  He left the vehicle unlocked so the thief wouldn't need to break a window.  Needless to say, when the thief got into his rig and started rooting around in the dark, the result wasn't pretty.  The clean-up was quite a chore apparently, but someone definitely learned their lesson that morning.

How exactly do your broadheads get busted up?  Rust?

I shoot a lot of LM in the Spring. Around May the big ones move up shallow and they will stay really still on a round circular shaped spot on the bottom. I keep my bow close while I'm fishing for carp and when I see a bass I put down the rod and pick up my bow. It's not as fun as carp fishing but it helps to pass the time between bites.
