2-Stroke Ban on Whatcom Revised

The Whatcom County Council has quietly amended their 2-stroke ban to basically allow some 2-stroke motors to legally use the lake.  Here's the amendment: CARBURATED TWO-STROKE ENGINES ARE PROHIBITED ON LAKE WHATCOM UNLESS THEY ARE CERTIFIED AND LABELED AS MEETING 2006 OR LATER MODEL YEAR EPA ADMISSION STANDARDS.  The EPA document on which this ordinance is based is actually an AIR QUALITY document issued to outboard manufacturers to reduce air pollution on US lakes, primarily Lake Tahoe in…See More

Potential Boat ban on Lake Whatcom

Once again, the Whatcom County Council has heard from some people regarding a boat ban on Lake Whatcom, wake boats in particular.  Here's a copy of the letter I wrote to the Council in that regard:Council Members:Prior to the AIS program, a survey (inspection) was taken of one thousand boats entering Lake Whatcom via Bloedel-Donovan Park.  I'm sorry, I don't have the exact date of this, but I do remember the results: of the one thousand boats inspected, three were found to contain invasive…See More

Thanks for the participation, bill update

Hello to all and thank you for your support on getting a Warm Water Advisory Committee established here in Washington State. Here is the status of our bill SB 6450 and HB 2666. SB 6450 was unanimously approved by the Senate Committee that handles natural resources. After that the bill went to the Ways and Means Committee to review funding (yes there is an assigned cost) and at that level it was also approved by the Senate Ways and Means Committee once again unanimously. From there it will go to…See More

One More Attempt

It seems we're consistent when it comes to supporting bass fishing via our state lawmakers.  We had a staggering total of FIVE for the last endorsement of a warm water fishery commission.  Here's another chance. This week we have had a positive response to our Bill in the Senate and hoping for the same in the House. This is a long process and we NEED everyone to go to the following links and click on the 'Support' button at each link. We only had 5 people do it and we need 500! It only takes…See More

Here's a chance for redemption

This week we have had a positive response to our Bill in the Senate and hoping for the same in the House. This is a long process and we NEED everyone to go to the following links and click on the 'Support' button at each link. We only had 5 people do it and we need 500! It only takes about 20 seconds on each link. Please do it. This is the first step to a better future for warm water fishing in our state. The legislators do listen! Here are the two links to comment on the bill we are proposing…See More

Last rant, I'm done.

After looking back over such items as the two-stroke ban, AIS program, and now HB 1579, I guess the politically correct thing to say is I'm disappointed. We had seven people speak on behalf of the new warm water limits, one person literally drove most of the night to make the board meeting in Bellingham. If you use the number of people simply as members of the Bass Fishing page here, (749), that's less than a one percent turnout. So, we had to accept an increase in catch limits, plus the fact…See More

Update on County Council Mtg Jan 14th

My post disappeared, so I'll restate it.  The council public hearing scheduled for the 14th will deal with modifying the current ordinance to place wake boats at least 300 feet from the shore line on Lake Samish.  Currently, there is no consideration taking place for Lake Whatcom.  The current ordinance states that ALL powered boats be 300 feet from shore, and the no wake provision for the bridge be 2700 feet on both sides. The modification would require only wake boats be 300 feet from shore,…See More

Proposed ban on Motorized Boats on Whatcom and Samish

The county council will be meeting Monday, January 14, at 7:00 pm, to discuss the removal of all motorized craft on Lakes Whatcom and Samish.  This started as a proposed ban on wake boats on Lake Samish, which have been raising hell with residents due to shoreline erosion caused by operating too close to the shore.  Personally, I thought banning wake boats would be a positive, since the operators seem to be as disrespectful as jet skiers.  But, as you can see, the discussion went from wake…See More

Motorized boat ban on all Whatcom Co. Lakes

This started as a ban on wake boats, which have been eroding the shoreline when being driven too close to shore.  At the time, I didn't think much of it, actually thought it might be a good thing, considering how annoying they can be, but now the county council is considering a motorized (all motorized) boat ban on Lake Whatcom and Lake Samish.  I've included the petition from change. org's website (allow fifteen minutes for Dana's diatribe). The meeting is slated for January 14, 7:00 pm …See More

HB 1579

As warmwater anglers, we should be very concerned about this: a lobbying group convinced our lawmakers that the biggest threat to the orca population is bass, catfish, and walleye.  Their threat is greater than dams, pollution, climate change, development, predatory birds, and overfishing.  The Commission got feedback letters from a little more than a thousand citizens, and we were outnumbered by a ratio of nearly seven to one. This anti-warmwater group is organized, and they have the ear of…See More

A Painful Experience

I don't really know if this qualifies as a blog post, but here goes: I've been semi-laid up for the past two weeks, due to a broken trolling motor switch, and some cortisone injections in my back, which is supposed to help reduce the effects of spinal arthritis and stenosis. I replaced the switch, and my back pain has subsided.

I put together a couple of spinner baits during my down time. I got the components from eBay and Cabelas. I haven't tried them yet, but they look good, and to me,… Continue
