Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Hey guys, I'm kicking an idea around.

Eastern Washington Bass Classic

A 2 day team tournament on Potholes in May, with lots of sponsor prizes and fun side pots, etc.

$200 a team

80% payback to 1/4 of field

Guaranteed $5K first place (more if more boats)

Payouts bolstered up by some sponsor dollars and prizes

The proceeds would go to support the EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY BASS CLUB?

Along with a Lake Clean-Up/Habitat Project that you would recieve a discount from a local retailer if you participate.

With the Eastern Washington University Fishing Club starting this Fall by me, looking to get started on some fundraising, plus I think it'd be a lot of fun to run a tournament.

Great idea Nick! I think this would get a huge turn out if it doesn't interfere with NW or ABA.
Thats what I was thinking. I am hoping to get my roll up the sleeves and see if I can't work with some clubs/organizations to get a date set-up. I'm sure I could get the sponsors needed for the event, just need the anglers. The way the economy is, I need to keep it economically friendly ($200) with a 1/4 payback, with a lots of sponsor prizes, so most everyone goes home with something.
Dude that would be pretty sick man, if you come through with it, ill talk to the chelan club and other people i know and see how many people i can round up, it would be fun.
I don't say much on here on Wafish because when somebody says something unpopular they get blasted. But this time I have to weigh in on this.

This past Saturday Gary Stiles from NW Bass, Ken Day from BASS, Larry Williams from ABA, and myself from WSBF, met at Banks Lake to work together to set our schedules for 2011. You have no idea how hard it is to try to work our circuits out so that we don't sit on each other without being on top of all of the opens that are now already being run. We all talked about how many opens there are now days and how hard it is to run a circuit. As I am sure most of you know, the state only allows 2 permits per month on a given body of water. The two events per month include walleye tournaments. And I hate to say this but the schedule is full this year. So the question I have to put to you is where is the extra weekend going to come from for another tournament?

I am saying is support what is out there. There are more than enough events to fish. Trying to add more will just make it harder for the established circuits to get permits.

I wish we had a longer season or more large bodies of water but we don't. And if we did it where would the angler's come from? If people have to choose between two opens both tournaments will suffer with lower participation. Which hurts everyone.

In closing I ask you to support the events that are on the calendar now and have fun. Adding more will only hurt those that have worked hard to build their events and make the permitting process even harder than it is now.

Thanks for listening.
This would be a great idea, keep us informed and I'll bring this to the potholes bass club board for some support. Nice to see more college bass clubs
I agree to what you are saying, but we need more support for our younger generation. I wish there would have been college clubs when I grew up. Bass fishing was'nt as popular then as it is now. As the old saying gose if you build it they will come, I think you'll get a lot of support for this, but Nick needs to get with you guys and see the proposed schedules for 2011, work together it is for a good cause

I agree with Gary. There are so many tournaments now that you almost can't prefish any of them because there are big tournaments almost every weekend. Most of us work Mon-Fri, so we only have the weekends to fish. Perfect example is the turn out for ABA on Sammamish. There were 14 boats on day one and 10 on day 2. At a $200.00 + buy in, it's not worth it! There should have been 30 boats. Nw Bass is the one circuit that seems to keep growing and getting better each year. For me, my main focus is going to be NW Bass. And if you want to even have a chance in that circuit you must prefish.... So in my case I would not have time to fit in another tournament in the year. Especially in MAY. Maybe another idea would be to partner up with one of the Tournaments and get some help for your Eastern Bass Classic?
Gary, I totally understand, and as I said I am just kicking around the idea first to get some feedback and I appreciate your feedback. That was a big question when I wanted to say Potholes in May, cause well Potholes in May is stellar. But I understand how hard it is to schedule tournaments, as I look at my schedule and don't know how i'm going to fit in pre-fishing for some of them.

So yes, there would certainly need to be a change in dates or location. Or even take up C-Ride's idea and partner with a tournament already going to help support the EWU club. But I know that is the one fundraising opportunity I want to take ahold of.

Any more idea's anyone?? Like I said, I'm just kicking around the idea to get feedback.

Yes, support your tournaments already in place!! Heck, I think i'm fishing every tournament trail in WA except for ABA.
I say go for it. I support the idea of the state giving some of the larger tournament trails some preferance on reserving some of the larger bodies of water. In May this year there are only a few small club tournaments on Pot Holes. There would have been plenty of room to have one this year.

Just touching in on my opinion I would like to see some less expensive opens. I am not there to make a living at tournaments. An entry of $100-$150 for a two day tournement would strike more interest for me.
Nick,

WSU Bass Club could help if you're interested. I've been tossing the idea around for a while now, but wanted to see how running a small tournament went first. Our club is having a little tournament at the end of July on Moses to determine club rankings for FLW registration priority.

Zack
I'm not dropping the idea at all, just open to more ideas and comments.

If there is room in May for a large tournament on Potholes, i'm still all for it. I believe it is the best venue and fishery for a larger tournament. Right now i'm just throwing the idea around.
Please believe me when I say that I am not trying to discourage you Nick. You know that I am one of the biggest supporters of young angler programs. There has to be a way to integrate your idea into another tournament. Because the addition of more events, we only thin the entries for the already existing events. People have to pick and choose and some of the events will suffer from a lack of boats. Such as the WSBF's late April Shoot Out on Banks Lake. When Nixon's Marine started holding their open on Moses the guys were pre-fishing the weekend of our event and we lost so many boats that we were forced to cancel our event. An event which was a fundrasier for the Federation. That is what I mean by too many event hurt everyone.

Another thought would be to revamp an existing event. You know that we have been wanting to change the parameters for the WSBF scholarship fund. Well maybe we shouldn’t do that. Maybe we should just turn the October scholarship tournament on Banks Lake into an event that would support our state's youth and college fishing programs. There is even a high school fishing program now. So there are lots of possibilities here.

I hope I get a lot of responses to this. Because I would love to make changes for the good of our future and I need everyone's ideas and input.
