Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Ok when I start planning for a fishing excursion on any body of water I will look at the season, then I study a topo map, then I try and find out the main forage, plant life, and water clarity.  Once I got that all figured out and I finally get on the water I then look at the water temperature and I try and always be aware of any wind and current.  Anytime I catch a fish I look at all these variables to help establish a pattern.

But I dont know if I really understand the whole idea of when and where fish feed...

How do you guys prepare to fish any body of water and how do you guys go about finding out when and where fish feed?

Joel,

Pay more attention to variables associated with the sun. Do this even fishing deep in the winter. Few people "I aint one either" fully and completely understand when and where fish feed.
Buy one of the fishing calendar. It show exactly when two hour window for fish feed during the day. And if you believe that I have many property on beach in State of Kansas I will sell you!!!!!! ha ha ha ha ha The main key is not when the bass feed but how do we as angler make fish bite when they are not feeding!!!!!!!
Joal , My advise your ya is too make atleast 2 trips per month too one of your favorite big lakes .. PHASE I : If you can do this from spring thru spring of the following year most of your questions will be unvailed , mostly because you get too witness the entire seasonal movement of both LMB & Smallies ..I did this exact same thing on lk washington for 2 years straight , So now a day i dont even have too fish the lake a regular and i can get right back out there and dailed in within an hour ...
I Fished on washington this past wkend , and i hadnt been out there since early spring , manage too get on fish right away and also we got a 5+LMB in the boat ..Im not braging here , im mainly pointing out that confidence in fish location and there feeding habits will not change too much..
PHASE II : The next step after completing phase one , the next starter topic will have something too do with "fishing the past" lol ....just do a search on hear too read how that goes . Just my opinion , good luck bro !

Dont really understand whats so confusing here ... maybe if some of you so-called sticks have something informative too add here we could all learn something new, its shouldn't be that difficult .. or is it !! lol
Watch some episodes of predator chasing/stalking prey on tv...seriously. I think all of the same lessons apply. All predators have a "kill zone" - a spot that puts them at an advantage to be successful. In bass fishing we call that the "sweet spot" or the "spot on the spot". Don't confuse the cover holding the prey with the kill zone - but it will be nearby. For example the top of the water can be the kill zone because it puts the predator (bass) in a position to be successful and the prey has little way to escape.

Once you've analyze all the factors you've listed, then start thinking about where the kill zone is and put your lure there.
Very good post, Don, and I agree 100%. When you mentioned the "kill zone" being the top of the water at times, this reminded me of an interesting scenario I have encountered on a few occasions while fishing for suspended smallmouth offshore that are keying on juvenile kokanee.

The juvenile kokanee will be 15-25 ft. down, suspended over 50 to 150+ feet of water, and the smallmouth will be at or slightly below the same depth as the kokes, just above the thermocline. I can see this activity on my graph. When I encounter this I will usually throw a soft plastic swimbait on a jighead, count it down, then retrieve it right through the wheel house depth or slightly above. There are times when I get no follows or strikes on this presentation so I switch gears. I will back off a little and make super long casts with a large topwater or a jointed hard swimbait that runs just below the surface on an aggressive retrieve. Sometimes they will swim up out of 20+ feet to smash these lures after they ignore a lure fished right past their noses. The "kill zone" can change hour to hour just to throw another twist into the mix. Like Aaron said, they will keep you guessing.....

Thanks Aaron,
Do you have any recommendations on where I can find good information about the seasonal patterns of the perch, crawdads and bluegill? I've been looking around and have found some things but is there a good book or some other resources out there that you recommend?

Bass dont just feed at one time of the day or a certain time.. That is the cool thing about bass fishing. They will bite if you present the lure right place right time of any day.. One thing that will help you is to know what the perch and the crawdads and the bluegill do at certain times of the year. That will help you figure out what they might be feeding on and give you a good idea where you want to start looking.. But there are so many things that can make you daily challenge out on the water change.. Just keep in mind never at any time are all the fish in the lake doing the same thing. you might be catching all your fish in 3' and someone else catching all of them in 25'.. Don't ever think that a bass wont have you guessing everytime you on the water tho thats whay they are so much fun to fish for.
