Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Here is a good one for Marc and a few of you guys to ponder. Is it just me, or is it common for everyone to NOT catch that many fish that have been marked with a marker in a tournament ( previously) The only Lake I catch a lot of them is Potholes. Even Moses Lake, I haven't caught hardly any with holes in their mouths, or even sore spots or evidence of clips. I understand also that more guys are using the clip ons instead of the clip ins, but I still find it odd. How long does it take to heal ? Did the traumatic boat ride and close encounter with Stiles, prevent them from biting again?

I have actually caught quite a few that had been marked or what I think have been marked. At "The Wash" aka WaWa or as most of us know it as HELL, i have caught a few and actually got one this winter. Banks I have caught a few of them. Not sure on the heal time or any of that but I use the clip on's now. I guess it just a numbers game. 100 anglers 500 fish and out of those how many are markedm kinda thing. Alot of guys dont mark fish until they have to. So the odds are pretty slim that you catch on of those.

It only takes a few days for the wounds to heal, remember most of the prey items they target are sharp and pointy!
I do believe that is "Firey Damnation of Hell" AKA "Satins bathtub"

Brian,

I agree with Eric, you must be spending too much time with the wifey with the "Satin bathtub".

LOL!!!
This is really a tough question to answer, and a good question that needs further research. I have been unable throughout the years to find meaningful research that provides answers to your question so I hesitate to provide conjecture.

I do know that recovery from punching holes in bass is possible, and probably likely under most favorable conditions. Of course a lot of factors could affect healing, such as water temperature, fitness, presence of bacteria and infection, water quality (DO and pH), stress, etc.

I have caught bass that have healed from this type of trauma, just as I have repeatedly caught bass that have been tagged. I think many do not catch bass that have been poked before because they do heal (or die) before recapture. I do know that many wounds caused by hooks do heal rapidly and with no visible sign of previous injury. Also keep in mind that bass do "learn" from their experiences, and may not be readily captured while healing from an encounter, and once they are recaptured may be healed.

I would love to see a study done on healing from wounds created by stringer type snaps. I suspect that survival is likely, so I have no real problem with people using these type of markers, but I use Bass Tags which don't poke holes, and I also use Life Tags that don't poke holes when I use culling markers. I also use a Bass Bag to weigh the bass on my CullMRite so I don't have to poke holes.

In my early tourney days, we didn't have live wells and we used stringers. I remember catching large bass and towing them around all day on a stringer only to be released after the weigh-in, and then catch those bass again in later events (with healing wounds). I'm sure we killed a lot of bass using this method, but it was the best we had at the time.

ciao,
Marc
