Last evening, I went to Lake Stickney for a quick trip. I tried a spinnerbait for the first time. After aproaching an area, I fan cast around the edges of the lily pads and then worked the lure closer and closer to the docks and shoreline. The depths were as shallow as one foot. No luck so I switched to a weightless senko. Most of the time I was fighting with keeping the angel hair looking "crud" off the lure and worm. I then tried a drop shot rig thinking it would elevate the plastic up off the bottom out of the "crud". This didn't work at all, constantly have to clean the vegetation from the bait.
What am I doing wrong, or does this junk even matter?

For shallow water situations where there is alot of vegetation a weightless texas rigged senko is a good call. I typically will fish the fall, then give the bait a good "pop" or two when reeling it in to get the crud off. Sometimes, you'll get a surprise too when a big'un hits your bait during one of those pops. Keep at it, there are some hogs in there...

Texas rigs seem to be the best in that situation, jigs, hook eye and weedguard seems to catch the gunk. A light punch rig seems to work better if you want the bulk of a jig without so much gunk build up. the pointed sinker seems let some of that stuff flow off your bait. That stuff is a pain, but you just have to work your way through it to the fish. Try hopping your bait instead of dragging it seems to help as well.
