What frogs do you guys like?
Do you prefer hollow body frogs or the buzz type frogs?
I have seen them on the shelves but don't know anyone who uses the frogs that have the actual legs on them.
Anyone ever catch Smallmouth on them?

I like frogs. I haven't fished the buzz type frogs as much as the hollow bodied style but I have a good friend that fishes the buzz type exclusively and does really well on them. I am still fishing the old bronzeye and I did catch a SM on one last friday.
I love frogs. I've been using the buzz type..Zoom Horny Toad and Stanley Ribbit with great results. Caught 3 and missed 7 today as a matter of fact. I have a hollow body Snag Proof Pro I need to break in as well. I seldom fish smallies so mine are all largies.
Kevin Van Dam seems to like fishing smallies with the "Rage tails" by strike king. I'm sure his love for that bait has everything to do with practical results and nothing to do with anything else.....such as financial opportunity.

Those are obviously the buzz type. I havent tried them, but its probably on my next to buy list as the topwater bite is turning on for me on the eastside a bit.

Hey Eric,

Frogging is hands down my favorite technique and I also consider it my best technique. Since I enjoy it so much, I have worked hard to try and dial in the finer points of the technique to maximize my success.

I have tried many of the hollow body and soft body frogs on the market. For the hollow body frogs, my favorites are the River2Sea Bully Wa (best walking frog), Spro Bronzeye (best combination of castability, durability and hook up ratio that I have found). I have caught some quality fish on the Deps Basirisky but I don't throw it a ton. I know that the Optimums and Snag Proofs have quite a following as well. I really like the hook up ratio on the Snag Proof, but at 1/2 oz. I can't cast it as well as I can the River2Sea (5/8 oz. and 3/4 oz.) or the Spro (5/8 oz.). The Optimum looks good, I just haven't given it a run.

For soft body frogs I like to experiment to see which action and profile the fish prefer on a given day. I like the Gambler Cane Toad, Zoom Horny Toad, Strike King Rage Shad and Rage Toad, Reaction Innovations Trixie Shark and Yamamoto Kreature (fished like a topwater frog).

I typically have 3 to 4 frog rods rigged and alternate between soft body and hollow body frogs depending on the fish's preference, conditions and cover.
I just started fishing frogs but I really love the Spro Bonzeye frog. I just got a couple Bully Wa's too. Can't wait to throw them!
Dear Dr Watson,
I am writing you as to inquire which rods you use for frogging?
I am using 65lb braid, do you like this for frogs?
Do you rub scent all over your frogs?
Have you ever seen a better looking fisherman than me?
Does Josh Potter ever send you strange messages?
Does TDot ever confuse you with his fast typing and slang?
Thank you and we are looking forward to your upcoming seminar,
Eric DeLay
Eric, I am sure Tag has a mirror in his house...good questions though.
Bottom line is that whenever your fishing plastic frogs....you always want to poke a bunch of holes in the back so it can breathe....

This should clear up any confusion.....

Which rods do you use for frogging?

I prefer the Lamiglas XC725 and XFT766 for hollow frogs. These rods have some serious horse power and are great for yanking fish out of heavy cover.

Because of the softer tip section, I prefer the Loomis frog rod for casting soft body frogs, skipping hollow body frogs and walking hollow body frogs in open water.

I am using 65lb braid, do you like this for frogs?

I have used 65 lb. braid in the past and it works great. However, I now use 50 lb. for both hollow body and soft body frogs. The 50 lb. is plenty strong and I like the additional casting distance I get with 50 lb. vs. 65 lb. Currently, the Sufix Performance Braid is my favorite braid for frogging. When the color starts to fade, I like to use a black permanent marker to color 10-15 feet of the braid above my lure. Just a confidence thing. I tie a San Diego knot with a few additional wraps or a double Palomar with my braid.

Do you rub scent all over your frogs?

I always coat my frogs in scent. I prefer Megastrike because of the handy tube. I feel like a well lubricated frog comes through the slop a little better. Also, it might encourage a fish to hold on a few extra moments or eat the frog a little deeper after the strike, resulting in a better hookset.

Have you ever seen a better looking fisherman than me?

Bess is a close 2nd, but no.

Does Josh Potter ever send you strange messages?

Not yet, but the week is young.

Does TDot ever confuse you with his fast typing and slang?

I live close enough to the border that I am able to decipher Canuckian pretty well.

That is funny stuff.

Tag,

Is that suffix line you are fishing round? I fished some suffix line a couple of years ago and I liked it until I tried Power Pro. Is this a new and improved Suffix line and am I missing something that is specific to frogging or is that simply your line of choice? I am due to re-rope a couple of rods and I am open to suggestions. I felt like the roundness of the Power Pro made it sharper which allowed it to come through the nasty cleaner.

-I've been using the snagproof bobbys frog pretty exclusively but am gonna try that R2S frog Tag keeps goin on about. 1/2 does get pretty annoying and it tears up easily but the hookup ratio (if they eat it of course) is money and it practically walks itself.
-Been throwing em on the Powell 735, pretty sweet rod. I might eventually check out the Dobyns 735 eventually while I'm at it.
-I'm with Tag and 50lb suffix. I've tried from 50-80 and anything above 50 I don't really like the casting distance or walk-a-bility (yea i said it). Power Pro is good if you want to floss your teef.
-Not a huge fan of the buzz frogs over hollow body myself but I did start throwin that ragetail stuff pretty recently. They gurgle like crazy.
-3:16 frogs are also pretty sweet (and have legs on em) but they don't do well in the slop obviously.

I have the optimum furbit and honestly don't like it very much. Its kinda hard to walk and the rabbit fur legs get all twisted and fall off/rot easily. I've changed out the legs on the bobbys frogs and they flare and move just as nice imo without the headache. The fish arrow cover jack is ok. Spros have the following but I like the snagproof better personally (a lot softer/collapses easier).

for modding tips.

But I went 0/4 last week though so I wouldn't listen to me either.
Tag,
Do you fish a frog outside of the morning bite? Do you get very many bites mid-day?
