Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I’m not perfect but I keep trying.  Cause that’s what I said I would do from the start...  It's just my personality.

What do you guys do to keep on trying and not giving up?  This weekend I almost broke my rod trying to tie a simple knot.  It was very frustrating.

Beth,
How do you almost break your rod trying to tie a knot?
Practice, Practice, Practice. When I get pissed, I go home and try another day. Not worth the aggravation. I mow the yard or some other thing to work it off.
Beth,

What is your real frustration? Is your frustration not catching fish? Or is it not being able to tie a knot?

There is so much information on Knots online its scary. If this is your dilema, then all you have to do is learn a couple different knots from websites. Palomar knot comes to mind, but you need to learn a couple knots as different knots work better for some of the popular techniques. An example is a loop knot for hard jerk baits. Plop down on the couch and practice tieing them. Then rinse and repeat. Put in a little couch time tieing knots and you'll have no problem tieing them in 30mph winds on 3ft white-caps.

If your frustration is catching....keep in mind you are new to Washington, and it will take some time to figure out the lakes/Rivers here. I've been here quite a while, and its still a mystery and probably always will be.

I suggest using the internet to network to find someone you feel comfortable going fishing with. Or just hire a guide.

Giving up is easy....One thing I've learned is that you are always 1 cast away from your biggest bass ever. Always keep that in mind.
Beth,

First off none of as anglers are ever perfect. We all have our ups and downs, sure there are times when everything seems to go just right and then there are the times it doesn't. Bass fishing is an extremely challenging sport part of why many of like it so much. There is no substitute for time on the water fishing. When things don't go well I use it as motivation to try to get better. We all should try to learn something new everytime we get on the water. Sometimes just the little things can be very helpful. We all have strengths and weaknesses as anglers, but by spending time trying to learn from our mistakes and getting better is what makes us better anglers. The more people you get to fish with the better as well. Many times just a different approach to something can make a big difference. It may be something like tackle oragization or how you rig a certain bait. Just keep your head up do some reasearch and spend time out on the water.
web sites for tying knots. They show the knots being tied in sort of a video type thingy;

As far as being new here, yes that can effect catching fish as it can be hard to FIND the fish. Even those of us that have been here for MANY years have problems catching fish at times. Just keep on keeping on and try fishing differently, and even fish any given lure different than they are normaly fished.
I am frustrated but in 'frustrated' another sense. Plus Amy and I got into a spat this weekend. I was practicing trying to tie a knot but it wasnt going so well. She knows be better than anyone else, and got under my skin. That is where I threw my rod down. All is good now I hope, I just needed to vent. Those websites will work like a charm for future reference.

I haven't fished here yet, but from what everyone has told me on the site, it is much harder to catch here than home. Is this true?
Only because there are fewer Bass, different conditions, colder water. So, yes, it's generaly harder to catch fish, and harder to catch big bass. The challenge is there, so it's more gratifying to catch Bass here. I used to live in Southern and Northern Calif. so I have a good idea how fishing still is down there. We all have bad days when others will be catching the heck out of the fish. Then there are the times when the littlest thing will set us off, been there, done that, sorta often.

Beth,

It depends where you are fishing and when. There are quite a few lakes/rivers in WA where 20, 30, or even 100 fish days are not unheard of. I've heard many lakes in CA are heavily pressured and fish are weary....so to answer your question, yes and no. Stupid fish willing to bite just about anything can be found in both WA, and California. Like California, the Washington Bass also can get lock jaw from time to time.

Take care

That is a good point about the pressure on Calif. lakes, I keep forgetting about that.

Always remember a day on the water is always better than a day at work, even when you don't catch anything!
You wont know until you try is my approach to fishing Beth. That's why I go as much as I possibly can. You can't get a bite if you don't have a hook in the water. If you get frustrated one trip out or with one experience just try to learn something from it. I fished a new lake this past Saturday and caught a couple fish but did not make the adjustments that I needed to early enough to catch a few more fish, but I learned a lot that can be applied on a future outing. Sounds like you just need to get out there and get the fun that comes along with purely being out fishing back in your life. As for hard to catch fish in WA it all depends I think pretty soon here you are going to get some very aggressive fish in pretty shallow water which usually makes for some exciting days on the water.
