Washington Fishing

I just picked up a couple of these frogs to try for my first hollow body frogs.  Are there any modifications that I may want to do with these?

What knot are you using with braid for these lures?

Thanks,

BJ

maybe cut the legs a little. it walks easier. and i always use a palomar with a drop of superglue. no worries just let it dry or it might stick to your rod.

i bend the hooks out alittle, better hook up ratio.  might get a few more weeds here and there but its worth it

Double Palomar, no glue required.  I just picked up the Koppers, a little softer than the rest so that should help hook up ratio.

I would use a double palomar as well, no glue. I like the power pro super slick 65# braid.  I am not familar with these frogs as far as fishing them but I have picked them up, I wouldn't bend the hooks out on them becasue it seemed to me that they are about the softest body on the market and you shouldn't have a problem with hook ups if you wait to set the hook and are using the right gear.

Lots of great feedback already but these frogs are excellent.  I do like trimming the legs a little to help them walk more freely.  No need to do a thing to the hooks.  They are perfect and the hookup ratio is flawless.  If the fish has the frog in its mouth when you set the hook, it is coming in the boat, no two ways about it.

I have caught over 100 fish on the frog below, most of them 4+ lbs.  It still doesn't take on a drop of water and the hooks are sticky sharp like they just came out of the package.

I like 65# braid (TUF-Line XP) with a double Palomar or Trilene knot with 7 wraps.  I find myself using the Trilene knot exclusively now because it is plenty strong, won't slip and the tag end is much shorter than you can achieve with the Palomar.  This may seem trivial, but after repeatedly tying on different frogs for varying conditions, you lose far less line on the spool, resulting in better casting distance.  Good luck, BJ!

Thanks everyone for the great advice!  One more question, how much is a little bit when you trim the legs?

Thanks again, I hope to try them out very soon!

Hey BJ,

I like to trim about 3/4 of an inch off the legs.

my buddy and I threw this frog in lake washington this morning with no luck. it seemed like it did what it was supposed to and no fish is most definitely due to my lack of experience. Any tips??

If it was me, I would be throwing it mid-day.  Not to say it wouldn't work in the mornings, but I like it when the sun is out and they have a reason to hide.  Make sure you are throwing it on braid or you will be sorry.

What is the advantage of the surgeon's loop?  I could see changing frogs quickly, anything else?  I have heard of trimming each leg a slightly different length.

Thanks!

Trim the legs 1/4" uneven from each other, as it makes the "walk the frog " action easier. Tie a surgeons end loop knot long and then loop it thru the eye and back around the frog. These are both tips per our frog fishing schooling we had from a very good fisherman.

Are you starting a fight with Ron and Tag?
