Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I just returned from the insane asylum AKA the Whatcom County Council.  Even though they didn't like the ordinance and the fee schedule, they passed both.  So now if you want to fish Lake Whatcom, you need to have your boat inspected.  HOWEVER, if you're from out of the area and participating in a tournament, the fee will be $5 per boat.  I was told this over the telephone, and have had nothing in writing, but that's what we have so far.  The Council was impressed with our invasive species decontamination requirement and documentation, but went forward anyway.  Also, you will be required to pay for an inspection if you launch on Lake Samish as well.  By 2015 they plan to require inspections and fees (yet to be determined) on all lakes in Whatcom County, including Terrell.

Thank you very much for your continued efforts and for keeping us informed, Joe. I know I speak for us all when I say it is greatly appreciated.

Here's a link to the story.  I think this was planned ahead of time.  Even after I showed the council the AIS decontamination forms, one of the council persons said bass boats posed a threat because they're coming from out of the area.  I don't think this is a liberal vs conservative agenda; someone has effectively brainwashed our local government into thinking that a bivalve in Utah poses a threat to our drinking water.

I say throw some zebra muscles in the lake and be done with the whole thing!!!! LAKE SAMISH now to this is a joke, they can expect a call from my phone to open the gate at whatcom at around 4 a.m. everyday while im sitting at work laughing like hell!!! Im tired of all the tree hugging liberal BULL****!!!!!!!!! I cant wait to run the hell out of my 2 stroke at whatcom, and i plan on pissing in bellinghams finest drinking water, so to all the liberal spineless turds who call bellingham home; DRINK UP!!!!!!!

Wow, what a cluster. So are they going to have someone at Lake Samish making sure boats have been inspected before people launch? That one came out of nowhere...

No one will be there to inspect boats. You will have to already have your sticker or drive all the way to Whatcom and back before you launch from what I understand. I'm tempted to just get a ticket on Samish and fight it in court since this won't hold up. I think the more court money they have to waste on this the better chance they won't implement county wide. Also, as much as I hate saying this, if Lake Whatcom is ever completely closed to boats, I would almost be tempted to dump some smallmouth in the Skagit. Luckily, I don't think they are capable of closing a navigable waterway in the state of Washington.

Ridiculous....it's all that comes to mind....ridiculous.

I just got off the phone with county councilwoman Barbara Brenner and she said they will not enforce the inspection on Lake Samish this year.

She is definitely on our side and is looking to amend some of the issues in the ordinance. She called the whole thing a "money grab" and thinks her fellow council members were spineless and intimidated by the city to go along with everything.

Thanks Aaron.
