Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Stuart Squires sent me this Sunday while he was out on Lake Washington in Newport Shores. Right after he and his wife posed in front of the sign, the homeowner came out and expressed her case in a not so polite way for the no fishing sign. According to her, all of the residents in Newport are against people fishing in there. Of course Stuart kept his cool, kindly stating she does not own the water he is fishing in as per the norm. I have a hard time believing that all of the residents in there are against fishing, after the reception they had for the NWB tournament there last year with signs, and refreshments for anglers. Wondering if anyone else saw this, and what your thoughts are.

Personally, not my favorite place to fish but something may need to be done about this...

That's B.S. and it's also illegal.
I think its sad that it came down to this but new it would eventually happen since so many tournament circuits have allowed participants to fish in there. Years ago before the T-circuits allowed fishing in there you could have 50-100 fish days in there with nothing under 4 lbs. I personally have been fishing in there since the early 90's before tournament guys new about it and had several home owners express their distaste for guys fishing in there, but have also had home owners come out and ask me what I was using so they could catch fish in their little paradise.

Not sure the legality of making it off limits as it is part of the lake, but when you have a large group that is against fishing in a particular part of the lake we need to take note and make sure we dont get totally banned from other areas or the lakes entirety which I hope would never happen.
I fished there a few weeks ago and the owner of the house, some old guy told me to stay 25 feet away from his boat, he asked politely so I did, the guy I was fishing with was pretty upset. I've never heard of the 25 foot rule. I think he's about the only resident who is upset of people fishing there, most resident's are pretty relaxed about fisherman, they typically say hello and ask what we're fishing for and if we caught anything. A couple of the residents actually like to fish for bass in their canals. I think the owner of Outdoor Emporium lives in the canals.

I've never heard of anyone owning water rights here in Washington or the US.
Just so I'm clear in the future, does anyone have the specific wording or the RCW on this topic? I have looked in the past, but have lost my link somewhere in cyberspace. I have had run-in's with owners in the past, always been polite about the situation, but would love to drops some knowledge if need be. Having fished Tapps for quite a while, I have seen what sort of legal action a group of homeowners can muster up. I have never fished Newport Shores, but certainly hope that this is just an isolated homeowner and not a HOA at work.

Chris
I was in there on Saturday and one home owner asked us if we were doing any good. I guess all home owners in the canals aren't against it but I've always thought in the back of my head that they must hate us.
You know what I think is sad? You suggesting we all pussy foot around our lakes so we don't get banned instead of respectfully acting out our rights to fish our lakes. I won't even address the condescending tone of your post.

How many tournaments did you win on all of those 50-100 fish, nothing but 4 pounders days?

I understand how people could be annoyed by waking up to a fisherman in their back yard but you bought a house that is 15 feet from a lake. Are you serious? A person chooses to live in a city with a population of 6 trillion, buy's a house on the waters edge and then complains about people being too close. I loved my house on the course but I sold it because the realtor never told me people would be playing golf on the course.

I honestly don't know what is more ridiculous....unreasonable lake front home owners or Russ 's suggestion as the solution.

I was in there a week ago and had a friendly conversation with a home owner. I think I may have even gotten a steak dinner invitation from the guy. Best thing we can all do is just be as polite as possible to them and just go about your business. No need to start any wars with the rich folk.
There have been a few blog posts about fishing around docks and homeowners in the past here with a lot of good converstions. (I started it with the conversation of how I was sprayed with a hose by a guy who thought I couldn't fish the shoreline and dock..)

This is another instance where a homeowner thinks they own the WATER too. Ridiculous. I talked to Stuart today about it and am glad to say he was very respectful towards the person and was a great sportsman, even telling the lady he hopes she has a wonderful day!
I am all for respectful. You can be respectful and still excercise your rights.

My concern is that a few of those home owner without a doubt have ties to governor Monte Burns. I wouldn't antagonize them, but I wouldn't stop fishing the area either. It may be wise to carry a set of regs with you to show that you are legal.
For sure! I have and will continue to strongly state the facts and my opinion to home owners both while I am fishing and hunting. I even carry the RCW in my wallet stating the law about harrassing a fisherman or hunter while in the act of taking game is against the law. I have also called police on more than one occassion on homeowners. I am all for standing up for my rights, i was just glad to see Stuart being respectful!

a couple times now we have had run ins with homeowners on lake washington during tournies. if they come out and ask decent enough we'll slowly fish the area on out if we aren't catching anything. most of the time i can talk and have a conversation with them enough to come to the understanding that we aren't touching their boat, dock, or property and just fishing. this usually goes pretty good unless the home owner is still being a jacka@@ and then my partner kicks in.. ha ha.. he is way more vocal and to the point.. usually at that point the home owner goes in for their own sake.
all you can do is try to be respectful enough but when a owner comes out and flat out show us no respect then they don't get it in return.
