Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

For everyone that atteneded the Sportsman Show and took in a seminar, what 1 thing did you learn and think that you will use the most in the next year. This could be anything, from a bait including how to fish it what color, or where to use it, or it could be how to rig a certain technique, or maybe even something philosophical.

I think this overview will be great for the guys that could not make it.

This thread is not meant for giving a guy props, lets not overdue it and fill the board with this, add a comment to their page if you think a good job is in order, lets stick to what you took away from these seminars.

The thing that I learned that I am most excited to try Is that a punch rig can be used to get a lure with the profile of a jig into gnarly wood that a regular jig would not be able to go in.
I learned about jig rate of fall and size and color options for different times of year. Great job to all the speakers!
Well, the first thing I learned is that you can out talk all the others. I thought Marcantonio was gonna climb up and drag you down from there! Seriously though, the point you made about matching the color of the lake bottom, was great. I have never thought of it that way. You packed alot of info into that hour! I really enjoyed the finess seminar that Maderos put on. Seeing the application of some of the techniques that I have yet to try was very helpful. Everyone put on a great seminar, and I really appreciate that you guys all take the time to share your knowledge with us! That's my favorite part of the sportsman show.
I thought Maderos's finesse seminar was great.  Enjoyed listening to him talk and took away a few things that I had never thought of.  One thing I will try is micro version of the flick shake for monster trout.  I want to use a sniper bolt with a 1/16 or 1/32 oz. jighead in a micro version of the flick shake.  i think it will be deadly.  All in all good stuff.

The use of the punch rig to make it into areas a normal jig wouldnt be able to fit into or make it through was great. As well as the size options and trailer selection for the jigs for the different seasons. How simple jig colors really need to be as well as dock skipping techniques.

And that just dropping a punch rig straight down catches fish hahaha that was classic.

One thing I am going to apply that I saw in both seminars is a very small movement of the rod tip manipulates and moves the bait way more than I thought.  I am going to use my wrist action to manipulate my baits more while keeping them in the strike zone.  Also matching the jigs to the bottom color is something I have never thought of, but essentially have been doing since I started fishing jigs...  Both the seminars I saw were great but I gotta say Ron has a pretty good sense of humor and thanks to him I am going to be fishing a rod longer than 7ft this year and I will likely get my boat stuck at least twice as many times as I did last year just so I can get to the brush nobody else has even considered trying!!!!!

I didn't get to watch much of the seminars this year.  Busy at a booth.  I know last year I got alot from Don Hogue's seminar.  The key phrase I got from him was, " The bass's dinner table", finding those area's that not only the bass are at, but actually go to feed.  I hadn't really thought about it in those particular terms before, but it really helped over this past year to think about that.  Area's that I knew that held fish but couldn't necessarily get alot of bites from and those area's that consistently kick fish out. " Dinner table "
 area's.

I did catch a little of Marc's crankbait seminar Friday night.  It was interesting to watch how those fish would react to different crankbaits brought through different levels of the water column.  I noticed that those fish would "look at" crankbaits above them, but not really attack them to eat them.  But cranks brought through them at their level or below them would trigger a strike. On any given day this does and will change out in the wild, just as in the tank.

I didnt Get chance to watch all the Seminars i was extreamly busy working the booth .. I did get chance to catch most of hobbs deal on jig fishing , I did pick up a few tips on the when and why on jig trailors which was very helpful . Based on the feed back i got from others that attented all the seminars , everything was positive and useful .. Nice work to all the anglers for stepping up and rep'n the bass community ;-)

I learned alot about jig fishing particualy from you Mr. Hobbs.  Thanks, great stuff that you don't always think about, but it make great sense and i think thats what sets the great anglers aside from us normal guys thinking outside the box but not way outside the box.  Also I learned that being at a seminar makes me want to go fishing asap. Thanks to all who spoke.
I took home plenty of tips, gear ideas and rigging.  Like others have said, matching the color to the bottom, struck a note with me.  Also enjoyed hearing the reasons behind certain choices.  Like rubber vs. silicone jig skirts and head types.  Also keeping the jig simple but changing trailer for color and rate of fall.  I will also be giving the multi-rig a go this year.
It is really hard to name just one thing learned from the seminars. But given just one, I would have to say it was Ron's demo of how far just shakin a rod tip moves a jig.
I learned a couple new things during seminars that I briefly got to see. I saw that Berkley has a new 5" chigger craw thanks to Tito, Mark M made me think that I need to experiment more with my leader lengths on my drop shot rig and Marcantoni put me over the top of what I have been thinking for along time and that is when things get tough I should be throwing more reaction baits, mainly due to the fact that even if the fish don't want to eat they have to react.  Sorry I couldn't make it too everyones different seminars and I wasn't able to watch the whole seminars that I just spoke of.
