Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I've heard stories about bass fisherman down South getting together say every Thursday evening for example and putting ten bucks in the pot and fishing a short 3 or 4 hour tourney.  Do we do anything like that here in Washnigton?  Are we allowed to do anything like that here in Washington?

Say for example we say every Thursday evening there will be a tourney on Washington from 5-8:30.  Ten bucks to get in, 5 for first and 5 for big fish.  Something like that...would that be something guys would be intersted in?  Is it even possible?  Do we even have enough guys intersted?  What are your guy's thoughts on this?

We would have to get a permit if more than 6 people wanted to participate regardless of of prizes. The permit is $24, and permits have allready been selected for this year obviously! However, you can still apply and hope for a permit. The TD has to fill out paperwork after the tourny also. Permits for next year are due next month! I like this idea Joel, and I also like the idea of mid week tournies locally! American, Washington, Sammamish, and Goodwin exc....These days I prefer to fish in the middle of the week, since boat traffic is minimal!
Right on...maybe we could call it the "WAFISH Evening Series" and pick a good local lake from each county up the I5 corridor...for example say Whatcom, Big, Goodwin, Washington, American, Black. That way we hopefully can get a heavy turnout from the local guys from each county.

or

We could just do it on the same lake. Like the first Thursday of every month there will be a tourney on Washington
I think you can do this type of thing anytime you want. You just have to call it a "fish-in.". Am I right or wrong?
As long as there is no $ or prizes involved.

Great idea, but it will never work unless you pick smaller lakes that don't have any large tournaments on them. The state only allows 2 tournaments per body of water per month. That is the problem with the mid-week evening tournaments.

But if you have less than 10 anglers the state regs now state that you don't have to have a permit. So keep them small and go fish!
Let me know, I'd be up for it.
Since it seems like nobody reads rules or laws, here is a link about tournaments:

Gary,
Can you please provide a link or statement to prove your point about not having a permit for tournaments with less than 10 anglers?

Aaron and Chris,
You guys are wrong! "A fishing contest is defined as any event where six or more licensed anglers (age 15 and older) fish competitively for game fish and determine winners, regardless of the prize value."

Girl fight?

So your telling me that when a group of guys goes to Potholes (lets say 6 guys on 3 boats), and you all decide that you want to see who has the biggest fish.... You are required to have a permit????????? Give me a break!

I say do it and just weigh in out on the water. Go to the smaller lakes and you will not be bothered. There are tons of rules and laws about everything. Get the guys out and go fishing!
And who really gives a shit! Really?
As for the 10 angler issue. It looks like they changed the WAC back again. We had it all worked out with WDFW so that events with 10 or less anglers didn't need a permit. We had that arrainged so that it would free up the permiting process a little. I guess that since Steve Jackson retired that has all changed and everyone now needs a permit.

I stand corrected. I will get in contact with WDFW tomorrow and work to get it changed back to the 10 person rule.

But I do urge you to care and follow the WAC.
Hi Joel,

What your looking to do is a "Fish In"... Not supposed to be any money changing hands, and typically these are operated on a big fish type of deal to stay within the slot limit.

Good idea though, even if its just for bragging rights.
