Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

It seems that in the last couple of years there have been a few close calls on the state record Largemouth and Smallmouth. I think that this year is going to be the year that at least one of these records is broken. Has anyone came close on either record or seen a fish in the past couple of years that you know was a record fish? I'm not sure why all of the sudden all of these big fish are showing up? I think there was even a state record Walleye that was caught and not official last year too! Just wanted to hear some big fish stories and see if any of the seasoned guys have any idea why the surge in really nice quality fish the last 2 years. Is it weather? Better anglers? Better lures? better fish management?

I heard about a potential state record walley that was caught below Wells Dam on the Columbia last year but it turned out not to be. A friend of mine's brother happened to be at the launch when the fish was brought in. He said it was huge but apparently after weighing it, it was not as big as originally believed to be.
I think we had potential for a record large mouth at Moses Lake but the word got out and with all the pressure I dont think it will happen now, could be wrong but there is a lot of people on that lake.
I know any given spring can produce a record largemouth out of one of the many small lakes on the west side. I have personally seen several fish caught that went over 9lbs. I weighed 3 of them that my buddies caught, but I haven't been fortunate enough to get one that big yet. I have seen a few others in the water that I know are over 10. I remember hearing that Tag got one either last year or the year before, that might have been the record but as I heard the story, he was more concerned about releasing the fish than getting his name in the books. I commend him on that! I would like to think I would have done the same thing, but I guess you never know until you have that class of a fish in your hands.
i caught a small mouth that was a little under 7 and a half and i know of a seasoned bass fisherman that caught one over 8 could have been 9 but released it for the fishes sake and i also saw a 8 and a quater pounder caught but the fish was killed in the livewell. All fish came from the columbia basin area.

I read about this in one of the hunting magazines last year. If I remember correctly, they reported that the scale was in Metric. Ouch...
Don Iman Guide Service caught a HUGE Walleye, he weighed it in Metric (unknowingly) and let it go because he swore his scale was right.

It turned out the fish would have smashed the record. He accidentally weighed it in Kilograms. OUCH!!!
In the Basin I have seen a couple Smallmouth caught that were pushing the record and released, and have seen several largmouth with my eyes during the spawn that would have gone 9lbs easy just havent gotten any of those bigens yet! Like Damon says the Basin is producing big fish a lot. Potholes and Moses and the surrounding waters. There were 2 fish caught in a Tourney on Moses last spring that went over 8lbs both Largies. One was caught by Aaron E. of Moses Lake.
