Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I had not heard a word about this at all localy, found this in the FLW Newsletter. It is absolutely fantastic to see the growth of the sport, and the quality of the competition. I would love to see the college series grow and gain support. Does anyone on the site know these guys? Any information on their club or if more colleges in the state have teams? Will their be an Apple Cup type Tournament? Any thing we can do to help out?

Washington State wins National Guard FLW College Fishing event on Lake Oroville
The team of Bernsen and Wright net $10,000 in scholarships

16.May.2009

OROVILLE, Calif. – The Washington State team of Ryan Bernsen of Burbank, Wash., and Kyle Wright of Pasco, Wash., won the National Guard FLW College Fishing Western Division tournament on Lake Oroville Saturday with six bass weighing 10 pounds, 9 ounces. The victory earned the team $10,000 to be split evenly between the school and the school’s bass-fishing club.

“This feels great,” said Bernsen. “It was a long drive down here, so this definitely made it worth our while.”

Wright said their first half hour was really slow. “We didn’t get into them right away, but then we were on them for about three hours. We caught about 25 fish throughout the day, but mainly in the morning.”

“We caught most of our fish drop shotting a Roboworm,” said Wright. “We were also throwing crankbaits and topwaters, but the drop shot is what worked.”

Bernsen and Wright said they plan to purchase some new rod and reels and additional gear for their club with the winnings.

They also said that it will be difficult to prepare for the Western Regional Championship in September being so far away. “We are going to fish the tournament at the end of May on the California Delta,” said Wright. “We will see what we can do and come back in the fall and go from there.”

My son Zack is the founder and President of the WSU Bass Club. He will be able to give you more information about the club and what they are up to. I do know that they are heading to the California Delta for a tournament this Saturday as well. You can check out the WSU Cougar Bass Club blog at Northwest Wild Country Radio out of Seattle.

Hi Keith,

My name is Zack and I am the president of the WSU Bass Fishing Club. We are the only team in the state so far, but we're hoping for some other come next season, namely UW. An Apple Cup tournament would be awesome. So far there are teams from Boise State, Oregon, Oregon State, Arizona State, and a ton from California.

For help, just spread the word. We are starting to get some recognition and support finally, but nothing helps more than people knowing who we are. The other big thing is insider info. Since there is no pre-fishing for these 1-day tournaments, any info about the lake we are fishing helps a lot. Next up is the Cal-Delta. We are really excited to fish it, but none of us have ever even seen the body of water. Any tips or pointers are certainly appreciated.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask as I'm on this site all the time.

Thanks,

Zack
Thats great! Go cougs. WSU has some pretty good water to practice on in between Lewiston and Lower Granite Dam. One of the few portions of the snake that has some good fish.
Thanks for the information. I wish I had any tips for your trip to the Delta, but I have never been there. I wish your team well, and will definately be following the FLW College Series more closely. GO COUGS!
Here is a link to the FLW College Fishing website for the Cal Delta Tournament. If interested you can watch the live weigh-in at 1:30 on Saturday on the FLW website as well.
