Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Several years ago while fishing a B.A.S.S. event in the Tri Cities I drew Ron Mace.  At that time he was running a Bullet boat and as we completed our run to the Snake I asked him "How fast were we going"?  I think he said in the low 90's.  I know Bass fishermen are proud of their boats and performance. I thought it would be interesting to hear what everyone is running, set up, and performance.

1980 Campion with a 1970 Johnson 85hp shows 30mph just me in the boat. Old and Slow.
I will start with my set up since it will be one of the least exciting. I have an 18'2" Nitro ( NX 882) with a 150 Mercury. After tuning it tirelessly, with the jackplate etc....I have it set up to do about 64 to 65 with me alone....and with another guy it will do about 60-62. That is all out and running 5800-6000 RPMs ( which I try not to do to much of ) My Prop is a Tempest II 23 Pitch. For a small boat, it does ok.

OK I will bite and set the slow standard, 1990 Ranger 361V 175 XP Evinrude, she has GPS max at 62.3mph.
I have......for now a 2003 ProCraft 190 SuperPro (18-6) with a 2003 Mer. 150 EFI...
It was GPS'd yesterday with two anglers..approx 570 lbs...full tackle complement...1/2 tank of fuel and 1/2 livewell water at 55.5 MPH.....Prop needs tuning at 23P..(Dang wire at Lake Sawyer launch!) Jackplate has been at factory settings.
I have a 96 Nitro 884- 18'4'' with a 150 Merc EFI LazerII prop 23 pitch. Don't have a clue where the previous owner has the stock jack plate set to. LOL Runs 59-61 GPS.

I have been thinking about getting a different prop. Any suggestions???
86 ranger 373V with a Yamaha ProV 150. It has a Trophy 24 pitch 4 blade on it. I would be happy to race anyone for the first 100 yards, but the prop limits the motor to about 5500 rpm. Full load and two guys will gps at about 54mph. With the right prop, 60 should be realistic.
I've got two 22 pitch and one 24 pitch Lazor II props for sale. And a 24 pitch and a 26 pitch Trophy 4 blade props I might sell, if I can get the other props I want. I have no idea if they would fit your engine. They all fit a '88 Mariner II 150, and 2003 Mercury Optimax 175.

719 Pro XP Phoenix 72 MPH at 5200 RPM got a ways to go before we hit 77-78 with her. Running a 225 SHO Yamaha.
'07 Triton TR20X-HP w/225 Pro-XS and 24P tempest prop, full load including wife and kid...GPS 74.2mph. Moved motor up 1/2" on Jack plate to get there.
2005 BassCat Sabre, DC, 150 hp Merc XR6 (carb) 23p Tempest+ fastest speed seen 64.1 gps, and lately a 24p Fury first time out 64.8 gps with driver, light tourny load, 1/2 tank and empty livewells.
2007 Triton TR196 with 2007 200HP Optimax.
Tempest 25 prop, full tourney load and full fuel tank, no passenger, I have hit 65MPH on Lake Sammamish in January.

Guessing smoother water and cold, dense air on Sammamish helped.

However, at 65MPH GPS, the ride was a bit scary... chine walk, constant trim, steering, and smooth touch on the hotfoot.

I'm still learning to drive, so take that into consideration.

One question I have is...

Is there a 21 foot bass boat out there that will carry a full tournament load, full fuel tank, with fishing partner, and comfortably do 70 MPH in slightly choppy water? Does such a boat exist, and what is it?

I hit a 4 foot wake doing about 55 GPS on Lake Wa last year, and after pulling the prop out of water, and then slamming back down at a complete stop, I thought I had broken something in my body... very scary experience.

I've heard talk of full tournament loads in Skeeters and Rangers doing 70 MPH plus in chop without so much as a twitch, even hands off steering wheel.

Are these stories true, or just wishful thinking?

Thanks for any input!
Buck I have the 20X-2 Triton and it does 70 without a quiver in chop. It rides the smoothest and is the easiest to drive Triton or any boat for that matter that goes over 70mph in rough water IMO. If you are looking for a good smooth ride and great handling this hull is for you. I have had it at 75 mph without having to worry about the chine walk you get out of the older TR series boats.
