Heard Ron and Mike won.  Congratulations fellas.  Clearly they don't seem to be taking the foot off the gas from last years incredible consistency....

How was it?  Any epic fish?  Heartbreaking lost giants....etc?

Evidently nobody fished this, it was a non event, and the tourney scene, while just getting going in 2013, is officially dead... At least on wafish.

Well, I think most were waiting for people who  actually fished it or were there to post up something about it (as the same for the ABA East) but that hasn't happened.

Here is what I know;

Day 1; SAT RESULTS

1. Hall/Tuner 22

Other notes and interesting facts;

- Sounds like most fish were smallmouth on beds with a few largemouth mixed in.

- 18 bags over 18lbs on Day 1 with bags only over 21lbs making the cut.

- BIG FISH (dont know if it was big fish for the event or not); Jason Lafave 9lbs

- Aaron E./David K. finished 17th after last years win

- Hobbs/Wolsky did not catch a fish over 5lbs all weekend

- Mike Bess failed to make the cut

Where were you Nick?  Too afraid to fish a real event?

Dana,

I couldn't agree more! He might be one of the most arogant people I have ever met.

Snake,

This site is far from dead! Matter of fact, we are just getting rolling. If I have my way, WAFISH will become the site that the whole nation will visit.

Moses was absolutely incredible. Steve and I stunk, we took way to long to figure them out. We had 4 smallies in the well for about 16 lbs. Lost another smallie that would have went 4 1/2 lbs. Do the math, bad day and we should have had 20 1/2 lbs. We went in to weigh and heard that you had to have over 21 to make the cut, well we just let the 4 go and licked our wounds. This is a tremendous fishery, the smallmouth are kicking tail. My congratulations to Hobbs and Wolsky, these boys can flat bring it. Thank you Nixons Marine and the Stiles for a great tournament. On a side note, you can leave emcee Kent Brown in California. I find him to be offensive and arrogant. So does most the other people I talked to.

Wow...a 9lber for big fish.  That had to be a thrill to catch, then a giant kick in the gut to not make the 2nd day.

and wow...kent brown getting dismantled?  I gotta ask the question!  How does a fishing event Dj have any room to develop arrogance?  That is like a half step down from a wedding singer!

Good to see Marc and Mike make the cut as it seems they've done well up there every year and narrowly missed it several times.

Interesting.....  It would be cool if there was a writer who was able to do a nice summary of how the tournament played out for the bigger events.  Kind of fun to follow the story lines.

National exposure from wafish?  hmmmm.....  i may have to get to work soon for another look-a-like thread if that is the direction....

I listened to him on either Espn 710 or 950 the morning of the tourney.  He sounded like a real D-Bag.  I've heard a bit about him and honestly was pretty disappointed.

I agree that a write up would be pretty cool for each of the big tourneys.  Get some interviews and some quotes and the run-down for how the day went.  Sounds like a great project for Snake to take up, it would be well written and entertaining.  Pretty sure that his schedule wouldn't allow it though.

Sounded like on day 1 the water in certain areas was "busy"

Nick I didn't realize you and Bess were good enough friends to bust his ball like that.

Curious, what did Kent say that got people wound up?

Hey guys, sorry I haven't spoken up about the tournament sooner, but I am in Spokane attending a work conference about drinking water issues and haven't had time to get on the computer.  Just read this thread and want to provide my perspective to some of the comments.

First and foremost, I want to thank Jeff and Kathy Priester for providing us the opportunity to participate in a class act tournament.  I also want to thank Gair and Lisa Styles for elevating the stature of the competition with their meticulous and well-executed game plan to make this event not only fair, but enjoyable for all.  I know that everyone appreciates this annual event, which is totally an "invitational" event, but I wonder if we really appreciate the value of having this opportunity.  This tournament is much more than just another bass fishing competition.

This tournament is likely the best in all aspects on the entire west coast.  No other venue does more to elevate the stature of bass fishing in the state of Washington.  IMHO, the bass fishing community needs all of the recognition and promotion that we can provide it.  The general population, and even the fishing community, has little understanding about bass fishing, and they simply do not understand or value what we do.  It is up to us to educate them and to promote our way of life.  If we fail, we all lose.  Events like this promote our livelyhood and bring credibility that bass fishing is a legitimate sport and worthy of preserving.

We need all of the publicity we can get, and bringing in a professional Emcee like Kent Brown adds value to what we do.  I probably know KB better than most, so let me share my view of KB.  Having traveled and fish across the country, and having lived and competed in tournaments in California for more than 13 years prior to moving to Washington, I understand that personalities and expressions of endearment greatly vary from region to region.  For those that do not know, Kent Brown is a future bass fishing Hall of Famer who as an individual has made great contributions to elevate the stature and professionalism of competitive bass fishing.  He was (and still is) a professional bass angler with credentials that we all should be envious about.  Not only is he an accomplished tournament angler, but he is one of the best promoters of our sport.  His radio show is top notch, and although it is probably little known in Washington State, it has a great following across the rest of the west coast.  Very few outside of Washington do as much to promote Washington State bass anglers the way KB does.  One reason is that KB pays attention to bass anglers in Washington, and he gives us our due to others in California, Arizona, New Mexico, etc.  This is a big deal for bass anglers in a state that is much better known for salmon, trout, and steelhead.

In different parts of the country people show respect and praise for others in different ways than we may be used to.  It was hard for me to accept and learn when I competed in California that you weren't fully arrived unless others "picked" on you.  It is the highest form of compliment in California to get razzed by well-respected anglers.  Those at the weigh-ins of the Nixon's Moses Lake Opens for the past years have probably noticed that everytime I come to the scales KB has made jokes about me.  You might view this as being inappropriate, but I appreciate it like you cannot believe.  Kent is really paying me the highest form of compliment.  He does the same with all of his friends and those he respects including Gary Dobyns, Skeet and Jimmy Reese, and many others.  In California this is how you earn respect, and you man up and give it back in an entertaining way rather than take it personally or be sensitive about it.

Put yourself in the crowds watching the weigh-in, without any clue what tournament fishing is all about, and how would you find it entertaining to watch a bunch of fishermen bringing fish to the scales?  How would you do as an Emcee, and how would you do the job and promote what we do in a favorable light?  Kent Brown took his valuable time to make the trip (year after year), and also concurrently do our local radio show as well as his own radio show while away from home.  He is helping us all to continue to improve the stature of bass fishing in our state!

Knowing KB better than most, I can assure you that he is not arrogant, and not meant to be offensive.  His lively banter is meant to be entertaining, and is done in a way that helps all of us, whether you fish in tournaments or just like to chase bass for fun.  We need more Kent Browns, and all the promotion we can get.  I for one appreciate it, and I appreciate the respect and due he gives to all us Washington bass anglers.  I also appreciate Jeff Priester for bringing in a professional Emcee to help elevate our sport!

Look at the close competition and excellent bass fishing this tournament showcased!  The weights were nothing short of phenominal, and the skill of Washington anglers to come in with these kind of weights on a public body of water should not go unnoticed.

Mike Matkowski and I ended up in ninth, and we almost became victims of overthinking our strategy.  As Jake mentioned, in other years we came in with great bags of smallmouth, but still just missed the cut.  Not knowing the lake well, and not having time to practice, in the past we have not chased the largemouths.  This year we had a good bag of prespawn smallmouths by 9 a.m. on Saturday, and decided to try for largemouths while it was still early.  We managed a 3.5 pound largemouth, and then connected on our kicker big largemouth that went over 6.3 pounds.  We then added a third largemouth to our bag, and then decided to lay off the smallmouths we had found to save them for Sunday because we felt confident we clearly had enough weight to make the cut.  We started sweating bullets about our decision when all the other 21+ pound bags were weighed, and we thought we had blown it right up until we learned our weight held enough to make the cut!

The second day was much tougher, and most of the prespawn smallies we had found on Saturday failed to cooperate on Sunday.  We still found and caught plenty of bass, but we didn't fish the bed fish enough to better our overall standing.  Boy did we learn what a disadvantage it was to not have a shallow water anchoring system which would have really helped to fish bedding bass in the strong winds we experienced!

Overall it was a special event with very close weights, and I want to congratulate Ron Hobbs and Mike Wolsky for beating us all!  They earned the win in this tight competition, and all can be proud just to have survived to day 2.

In conclusion, I really want to thank Nixon's Marine and Northwest Bass for providing all of us the opportunity to do what we love, and for elevating the professionalism of this event by how well organized they were, and for bringing in a special Emcee in Kent Brown from Ultimate Bass Radio!

ciao,

Marc Marcantonio
