The results are now posted at the TBF website.

We hit this lake at it's absolute prime.  Flaming Gorge has been notorious for smaller bags as previous qualifiers had been held at later dates and smaller fish were abundant.

No small fish here, as the BIG girls were up in force in prime time pre spawn feeding.  Most of the big bags on day one and two were taken from the bay by Antlelope Point launch in Utah.  There was a prime point that was a staging area for the smallies before they moved on to spawn.  It included a 5+ smallie from the leader and eventual winner. Kyle Gelles.

Myself and Brian Merlini were concentrating on an area around Anvil Pit Bays.  There were numerous deep water reefs holding alot of 3lb fish.  Imagine my surprise on the first day to be 3rd from last boat out and to drive down to my area and find absolutely NO ONE, fishing these reefs.  I had my 5th fish on twice that day and had one break off my jerkbait and one come off half way to the boat.  The prime pattern day one was jerkbaits in various colors and depths.  At least I wasn't out of it and was confident that fish would be moving to my water during the remaining days.

Day 2 was the same, no one fishing these reefs but myself.  I put 3 big girls in the boat after they wouldn't hit jerkbaits I switched to a KGM 4.5 swimbait in ghost.  My day two partner also got 3 from this area and wanted to fish his gorge water.  We ran 6 miles into the gorge and quickly hit a small, 2lb keeper, I contemplated throwing this fish back but had promised myself NOT to throw anything back.  With the no cull rule and seeing past results where anglers had missed weighing a limit by throwing back fish.  I immediately throw back to the spot and proceded to hook a 3.5 smallie on a deep jerbait and finished my day two limit by 10:30.

Day 3 and only 14oz's behind Wes Wezenberg I knew I was in good position to go to the Nationals.  I concentrated on the swimbait bite and had 3 good ones, and a 2 lber, by 10.  I head to a reef that had produced my big fish from day 2.  The 4th cast to the reef produced the second biggest fish of the tourney. A giant 4lb 14oz smallie and my final fish at 10:45.  I continued to fish to show my great young back seater how to work a jerkbait and it produce another 4lber from the same reef.  Unfortunately with the no cull, I had to toss her back but knew that I had a good bag.  All I could do for the rest of the day was help the backseater try and catch fish.

The Antelope bay area had been fish hard for two days and the leader only manage to catch 11lbs and most boats really struggled that final day.  My great day 3 bag launched me all the way up the leader board to 3rd place overall and winning the Washington state team by 8+ pounds.

The learning point from this tourney was that as most guys were fishing spots, and struggled when their fish dried up.  I had located an area where fish were continually coming to me everyday and I fished a pattern over multiple spots to be able to consitently improve my weight every day.

So on to the Nationals with Brian Merlini who did a tremendous job given the circumstance he over came to come in 2nd on the Washington team.

Mark
