I know a lot of you have some good stories on home owners that have came out yelling, swearing, throwing stuff at your boat and such so lets here them!...

I bring this up because I just had one happen to me...

I was out on Lake Stevens yesterday flipping docks. I pulled up to one of my favorite spots and starting to move up close to a dock and an old guy came out of the house. He looked like he wanted to talk and tell me a fishing story or how he saw a big one under his dock or something so I said "good evening sir". Right as soon as I get the words out I knew he wasn't happy. He starts going off on me telling me I am tresspassing and how I am the most inconsiderate jack arse he has ever seen and a bunch more cursing and yelling at me. So I tell him what I am doing is perfectly legal and if he has a problem to call the sheriff. He then says he is going to have to get the hose and spray me down then. He then procedes to get the hose walk to the edge of his dock. I again tell him I have just as much right to the water as him and I am again, legal. He points the hose at my face and I tell him I am only going to ask him once not to. He then srays down my boat and me. I continue to fish around him and he throws the hose towards my line in hopes to get wrapped up in it. I then back the boat up and call the sheriff. He responds and goes to the guys house. I told the sheriff it is not a big deal but I am going to fish that particular dock again and he needs to be told what is right and that he can't do that.

I did not throw my jig on his dock, mess with his boat, and was completely respectful. Does everybody think they own everything these days? I don't get it. I have had kids, adults and just about everything come and ask me about fishing and tell me fishing stories from their dock but this was different. It turned my good fishing day into something negative.

Just for anyone that wants this. I also called the game warden and gave him the address along with this RCW so he didn't have to look it up.

RCW 77.15.210
Obstructing the taking of fish, shellfish, or wildlife --Penalty is a gross misdemeanor and or jail time.

I have had this also happen while duck hunting (people coming out and scaring birds off so I can't get them or yelling at me).

I just wanted to ask a question here regarding marinas. If the sign says "no trespassing" does that mean no getting on their dock, or does that mean no fishing/no entry???

I pulled up near (20 yards) a dock on Lake WA to check out a really cool looking boat tied up to a dock.

The security guys swarmed out on the dock and screamed at us to leave or be arrested, put their hands on their guns in their jackets, and were generally obnoxious. We anchored and fished there just to annoy them. Guess they knew better than to call the police since we were doing nothing illegal.

You are a patient man Nick. I would hope I would have reacted the same, but I'm certain I would not have. Let us know what the officer had to say.

Nice work in handling the crazy guy. I had a similar situatuation happen to me 2 years ago on Long Lake in Spokane. It didn't result in me needing a change of clothes but it was amplified by the fact that the guy who came out to scream at me did so despite seeing my 4 and 5 year old sons in the boat with me. I stayed pretty cool and respectful until he started talking directly to my sons. Besides the fact that I would never want to disrespect our sport or my fellow sportsman. I stand to loose way too much by caving to the insults this guy was throwing and I really just wanted to get my boys out of a hostile situaiton. Having said that the guy that would normally occupy my back seat on a fun fish day at home( not referring to my tournament partner) stands to loose less and would jump at the invitation of hostility.
We were all lucky that day.

Looks like you did the right thing by not getting confrontational with the guy..You handled it the way a true sportsman should and did. Congrats for holding back..Hopefully the Sheriff scolded the guy and he learns a little lesson. Maybe he got a ticket..who knows. Go back and say hi to him next time..T.

Thanks for the RCW Nick.
I went through something similar when I was your age and it didn't turn out well for the guy's car a few weeks later.
Next time I hope to handle it as maturely as you did. Very nicely handled. You may after the month you've had think that you are a magnet for mental cases but I know many fisherman who have been harrassed by dock owners.
What did the sheriff say? I think you should have pressed charges.

So what exactly did the sheriff have to say? I have had several instances in my life where it seemed the law "enforcement" officials didnt have a clue when it comes to property rights and land issues. I have had issues with homeowners before but never on Lake Stevens...
