Borderline Bassin Contenders will be holding their annual Lake Whatcom Fall Open on Saturday October 22nd, 2011.  Driver's meeting will be at 7 AM sharp and blast off will be at safe light.  I anticipate we will blast off between 7:15 and 7:30 AM.  Please try to be registered with your boat inspected prior to the driver's meeting.  I will be in the upper portion of the parking lot at Bloedel Donovan Park at 6 AM accepting entry forms and doing boat inspections as people drive in.  I figure this should make things run smoothly. Entry fee is $100 per team plus $20 big fish.  Entry fee is paid back 80% and big fish 100%.  Payout is 40% to 1st, 35% to 2nd, and 25% to 3rd.  We can have a vote at the driver's meeting to see if people would rather have weigh in at 3 or 4 PM.  I have attached the entry form and rules to this thread.  If you would like to mail your entry in early, PM me and I can provide you with my address.  There have not been any issues yet with people just showing up on tourney morning with their entry forms.  Also, please try to bring your own signed entry form to the tournament if at all possible.  I will bring extras but hardly anyone brought their own last year and I used every last spare form I brought.  If you have any questions, shoot me a PM.  As it is every year, this tournament should be a blast and the fishing should be excellent!  Hope to see all of you that can make it there!

Clarification on issues that have come up in the past, these will be handled at my discretion:

1)  Each team will be allowed one re weigh.  If you choose to re weigh, you must take your second weight regardless of what it turns out to be.

2) Carbureted two stroke outboards are not allowed on Lake Whatcom.  You are allowed to have one on your boat and only run your trolling motor however.  Therefore, Borderline will not tell someone whether or not they can fish based on their outboard.  Also, it is impossible for me personally to watch everyone so I will not take any protests involving people saying someone was running an illegal outboard.  However, if you do run a carbureted two stroke motor, you are subject to being written a ticket.  There was no one on the lake enforcing this law last year but I cannot gaurantee this will be the case again this year.  I haven't heard any news on whether they will be enforcing this law this year.  If you do run a carbureted two stroke motor, understand that you are doing so AT YOUR OWN RISK.  Borderline will not assume any responsibility if you are written a ticket.

3) Off limits - The lake will be off limist to all competitors starting 12 AM on Monday October 17th until the start of the tournament.

FYI on Motor Regs:

January 1, 2009—The operation of all carbureted two-stroke engine powered watercraft on Lake Whatcom is prohibited, except: Watercraft powered by a two-stroke engine that is certified and labeled as meeting the 2006 or later model year US EPA emissions standards, auxiliary sailboat engines, 10 horsepower or less engines, and all electronic fuel injected two-stroke engines originally purchased before August 2004.

It was a constant downpour with intermittent dry spells but a blast nonetheless!  We had 16 boats show up which is REALLY good for the fall open!  Thanks again to everyone that showed up!  Fishing wasn't overly spectacular but a few teams did very well despite that!  Robert and I did all we could but could only muster up 6 keepers and the best 5 were only 12.75.  Still though, we felt very fortunate to even have that weight!!

The top finishers were as follows

1st - Curt Huisman flying solo!! 15.95 lbs for 5 fish!  Awesome job Curt!

2nd-  Joe Boyd and Dez Ruffin - 14.44 lbs for 5 fish.  Great job as well!

3rd- Chris Ferry and Nick Berto - 13.98 lbs for 5 fish.  Great job that apparently included a clutch last minute catch!

Big Fish-  Mark Heaslip and Greg Burton with a 5.76 lb MONSTER that also was apparently a thrilling last minute catch!!

Congrats to all who did well and thanks again to everyone that showed up!!  It was fun times and good to see you all out there!!

What was the predominant pattern/depth that got it done?

Hey John, The bite was pretty spread out from what I heard.  It sounded like it was won fishing deep (im guessing 20 feet and deeper) pilings and wood with a homemade Maribou jig.  Second was a mixture of 8' of water with a crankbait and out deep with a football jig.  3rd was all out deep with a football jig.  Those were the stories I heard.  Kind of a mixed bag of stuff going on and just moving around until you ran into fish seemed like the key.  Robert and I got our fish fishing a mixture of deeper (18-35') flats with composition changes, rocks, and/or isolated boulders and also fishing deep wood in 20-35' of water.  We threw everything we knew at them and lost a ton of gear but only caught fish dropshotting.

Thanks again Borderline and David for hosting the event, I look forward to the spring event.

Good evening to all,

Mr. Parnicky and the Borderline Tuff Guys,

Great time enjoyed on WHA,WHA -Com. Looking forward to the blessings of the next season.

Thanks again,

Ab

Tony and I caught 'em pretty shallow with most of the fish coming from 12-20'. We caught them on dropshot, football head and carolina rig. We ended up with 15 keepers for the day but couldnt seem to get the right kind of bites, with small 1-2oz upgrades here and there. I think our weight was just under 13lbs.

Thanks again for putting this on Parnsworth and the rest of the borderline club. Looking forward to next year.

Note too self , self stop typing things like 2nd favorite !!  lol

This was the very first time i have fished this event which just so happens to be during the same time i make a few trips up too lk whatcom before the lake closes each year .

Well My partner Joe Boyd (Awesome gentleman) and i had a full day of non~stop action from start to finish this past saturday . During pre fish we were able to put together two different  patterns , We found a good reaction bite near wood in about 8-12 ft near the creek channel and we also found a truly magical rock pile right off a main lake point that sat in 29ft just adjacent to deeper water.

Our reaction bites mainly came on Deep diving crankbaits and also Jerkbaits . I have to point out that most of these bites were very spot specific and mulitable cast was the only way we could get those shallow fish to go . I personaly made a few adjustments to my jerkbait too ensure the proper action , I added a susupend dot under the nose of my bait so that once i got it down to my desired depth it stayed there , and i also replace my back treb hook out with a feather tail treb hook  to add a little more bulk to the overall profile.

As for the crankbait bite , those smallies prefered the wide wooble action with a diving range of 10-12 ft with a slow and steady retrieve and color didnt seem to matter.  (end results were 4 keepers)

As for Our magical rock pile , well it gave us back to back 4lb smallies during pre fish with all fish coming on football heads . Lucky for us all of those same fish were still there on tourney morning and feel like i was able to catch about 80% of all those fish . I did have 2 smallies that pulled down so hard on my rod that the hook just bent out and i lost a couple of those monsters which cost us a win :-(  .......(end result 6 keepers)

I would like to thank Borderline Bass Club for putting on a awesome fall event , David ran the event very well and everything went according to plan from what i witness .

Thanks again parnsworth and i look forward to returning there come spring 2012 bro :-)

Mr Joe Boyd i would also like to say "Hats off" to you for putting some good fish in the boat . Did i also mention that Joe and i didnt have a net in the boat  allllll day :-0 !!!  (lucky)

Got chance to hit the lake this past wkend and im glad i got out there , the lake is super low right now so many of my spots didnt have any water . My Predictions is that 15~16lbs will take the win , i wouldnt dare say that caught more wieght than that , Nope not gonna say that :-)

I'm glad I could redeem myself at the pipe, because I could NOT find that rock pile to save my life!  I thought for awhile I'd be spending the day watching Dez pull fish off the rock pile while I just got wetter.  Interestingly, the two areas where we caught fish the previous week still held nice fish at the tournament.  Thanks again to all who came, and to David P for a good season of tournaments for the club.  JB

I had a great time at the tournament despite the crazy weather. Fishing was really slow for Chris and I and we really didn’t have a good day with numbers of fish caught but Chris managed to catch a fish at about 2:57pm that made number 5 and 3 of our 5 were pretty solid fish. We caught all our fish on football heads in 20’-30’ like Dave said and nothing special, just grinded it out and kept going. Thanks Dave and Borderline for the tournament and looking forward to the spring event.

2 of our fish.

And the big fish, what a beast!

Looks like that biggun swallowed a softball
