Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

A buddy from Japan just visited and brought me some bass tackle and magazines from Tokyo. One of the bass magazines has a picture of this dude Shogo Motegi who won a major tournament over there drop shotting a 2.5 inch skinny shiner on 2lb test Finesse Brave Flouro....yes I said 2LB TEST!!! Just wondering if any of you guys have gotten that extreme with your dropshot fishing? I'm sure its only a matter of time before someone uses it and wins over here in the USA!

Ya I agree Jason, I spent a year teaching in Tokyo after I graduated from WWU...I fished as much as possible and learned a lot...would have learned more if I could speak Japanies:-)

I caught a 3lbs. 8oz. Smallmouth off a bed (American Lake) on my ultralight rig, 4 and half foot glass rod with 2lbs mono line, she had been hooked twice before and had broken off,  as she still had two hooks in her mouth. The key was flawless drag. I will use this rig fishing for bass on beds that I know have seen a lot of baits; I use dropshot setup with 2 inch senko, any earth tone color. I have not broken off with this rig in a long time.

What kind of baits were they using in Japan?

Mark cool ultra finesse setup, I'm going to have to try that. When I was there the flick shake was just getting popular over there so I fished that a lot, they also had some very unique hardbaits, specifically topwaters that I liked...we actually have access to most of the better Japanese tackle over here on tackle warehouse or the hook up tackle now...OSP, Evergreen, Jackal, Lucky Craft, etc...one cool thing was Yamamoto actually makes different soft plastics over in Japan.

I use a 7 1  ML spinning rod with 6 lb test for drop shot. That's as low as I will go for line. I wanna buy a cheep ultra light pole and put some 2lb on it and threw 1\16 oz jig heads with single tail grubs and catch some american lake rock bass. They are small but would put up a fun fight on a setup like that, which would make for a good day cause every cast at american, I can almost get a rock bass guaranteed. Lol

Back on subject, I can see that happening tho, when the bass are in super pressured conditions, that's what it takes to get bites...

Good topic right here!!

I am going to mess around with 3lb test next year.  I just need to find another reel to fish it on or I'll put it on my 8lb braid and use a swivel. I have zero faith in a line to line knot with line diameters that small.

Is there a rod out there anyone recommends for this ultra finesse drop shotting?

Joel, check out the okuma c3-40x 7' ml spinning rod. It is pure awesome. Look it up on tackle warehouse, you can read my review on it...

The only one I've seen that's actually rated for 4lb test is the Powell Endurance Spinning Rod 6'10" Light

The rod I use is rated for 4-10lb line. It is a St Croix Legend Elite 6'6" Med-Lite power fast action. Model LES66MLF.  I feel I could fish 3lb on it successfully especially given some time to tinker.  But the only 3lb test I think I might trust is the Berkley 100% Ice Flouro and it comes in spools of 75 yards only.

I propose a day where everyone has to fish 2lb fluro for the entire day.   Then report back here with pictures, weights and sad stories.    Mostly sad stories probably.....  That would be entertaining none the less.

I say we do it during the spring.  That way we can have a chance at seeing some of the fish we are hooking thus making it easier to gauge just how sad the story is or how AWESOME!
