Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I have heard several reports now of Walleye being caught in Lake Washington.
At first I was very skeptical, I just figured someone was misidentifying a Squawfish or something.
After personally interrogating one angler making this claim I am convinced that there are Walleye in the lake. I doubt it is a breeding population but if there are both sexes present that will change eventually.
How many people here know anything about this subject?

Eric,

A friend of mine who is a fisheries biologist and tournament bass angler has personally caught a Walleye in Lake Washington (about 5 years ago as I recall). He has the photo's also. There is no doubt in my mind that there is a tiny population at the moment, but that certainly could change over time. There is no biological reason Lake Washington could not support a huge population of Walleye, but it is a very unpopular thought to fishery biologists as they are very worried about the predation problem to salmonids (which likely will occur since walleye are pelagic and their range overlaps salmonids much more than other spiny rays).

ciao,
Marc
Their concerns concern me.
I worry that if the Walleye become prolific in the lake there may be some eradication efforts that would hurt the bass populations.

I strongly encourage anyone who catches one to takes some pics with background for the site and then gently harvest the fish.

Eric you spelled Skeptical wrong
Thanks, I fixed it.
Q. What is weirder than me spelling it wrong?
A. Ron knew how to spell it correctly.

Oh WDFW has shocked up all kinds of strange fish in Lake Washington, I know they have shocked up Walleye, because a WDFW employee told me he did! He also shocked up two Snapping Turtles, the kind found in the deep south east US, they did not walk here! If there are two I am sure there are more, skinny dippers beware!

Maderos probably put them in there to have more stuff to troll for.
I don't see why they wont be successful in the lake. It would be kind of cool to have them here on the west side. I'm not sure I share your fears about eradication affecting the bass population though. If any fish needs to be eraticated, it would be the northern pike minnow, and ZERO effort to take them out of lake washington has been made. (or at least any that I am aware of outside the river) Plus, you would have a bunch of Walleye guys barking about it just like we would about bass.

If anything, it could benefit the quality of fish in the lake be thinning out a few of the smaller fish. This theory can be argued by two words though. Banks Lake.
Hey Eric, I found this article from the Seattle Times. I guess this 'eye was caught just last month.

Con Ville probably brought it back from the river and called the paper just to see his name in print.

I was fishing for a couple bass under a dock in the NW Bass tourney on Lk Wa two years ago and that fag set up on the other side of the dock and started casting to the same fish.
