Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Hi Everyone,

Borderline Bassin Contenders will be holding their annual Lake Whatcom Fall Open on Saturday, October 23rd.  Registration will be at 6:15 AM with a drivers meeting shortly after.  We will draw boat numbers once everyone has been registered and blast off at safe light.  Weigh in will be at 3 PM.  Entry fee is $100 per team and $20 big fish option.  If you wish, you can email me your completed entry forms at dparnicky@gmail.com.  It is perfectly acceptable and preferred however to hand in registration forms on tournament morning. I have attached a copy of the registration form as well as tournament rules to this post.  Feel free to contact me on here if you have any questions or concerns.  I hope to see you there!  It should be a fun day on a great lake!

**Note**  I have tested our club's scale on weights and it is ACCURATE.  In order to speed up the weigh in process, each team is entitled to only ONE re-weigh.  If you ask for a re-weigh, I encourage that you deem it necessary as you will be forced to take the second weight regardless of whether it is higher or lower than your original weight.  This is the only way to keep things moving along and orderly at weigh in.  I don't want to hear any whining! :)

David, thanks for the kind words and for the consideration of letting a "boatless in Bellingham" participant fish the tournament. I will be out of town for business that weekend but I hope the fishing is dynamite and that everyone has a ton of fun.

Just a quick heads up: If you run into Brandon during the day and he tells you he has a "small limit", there is a good chance he has around 20 lbs.

Wasn't me, Mark and Shannan Jones from Evergreen were up there, might have been them.

This lake is a "low emissions" lake and to run a boat that is a violation of city laws is also violating tournament rules... I saw a few boats during the Spring Open that were not...
You are correct Nick. There are emission regulations on Lake Whatcom. The current regulations read as follows.

January 1, 2009—The operation of all carbureted two-stroke engine powered watercraft on Lake Whatcom is prohibited, except: Watercraft powered by a two-stroke engine that is certified and labeled as meeting the 2006 or later model year US EPA emissions standards, auxiliary sailboat engines, 10 horsepower or less engines, and all electronic fuel injected two-stroke engines originally purchased before August 2004.

The regulations become more strict in 2013 but as of now, the way the regulation reads is basically any EFI engine is ok as I dont know many EFI engines that dont meet the 2006 EPA emission standards or were originally purchased before August 2004. I think that only leaves out 2005 models that are yet to be tested.

**Note on Borderline's Stance on this Issue**
As tournament director, it is my responsibility to relay Borderline's stance on the emission regulations. Our stance is that we will NOT be checking for engine compliancy with the regulations. We will not disqualify anyone for having an engine that fails to meet regulations as we will not be checking. However, we will not assume any liability if you are written a ticket. It is up to the operator to make what they feel to be the correct decision. Fish at your own risk if your engine does not meet the regulations. With that being said however, It is perfectly acceptable to operate a boat with a non compliant motor if you do not start your outboard. From what I understand, you will not recieve a ticket for only running your trolling motor. Believe me, there are MANY good fish that can be had within trolling motor reach of Bloedel Donovan Park too! If you have a non compliant motor, it will be our assumption that you will only be running your trolling motor. We will not be double checking to confirm this however as it is NOT our responsibility.

This is all I can say and all I am going to say on this issue. I hope we can not worry about this and have a fun tournament for everyone that decides to make it out!

Dave~ In your "TOURNAMENT REGULATIONS.rtf" you attatched it states;

EQUIPMENT AND FISHING METHODS: All state and local laws along with safe boating rules shall be observed at all times.

So you are saying you are going to ignore the tournament rules and not uphold this particular one which clearly includes you cannot use non-compliant motors because it is a local law?

I agree that if someone just wants to use their trolling motor it would be fine but to run a motor against the local law would therefore be violating tournament rules and subject to disqualification...

I am not trying to upset anyone or anything I just believe that if someone from the community got upset about people violating the law, especially a group of tournament anglers fishing during a tournament, it would reflect negatively upon us all and do not think that it would be right...

Borderline is currently conferring as a club on the motor issue. We are considering revising our rules. I will keep everyone posted. The main issue is we do not want to refuse launch to boats without compliant motors as they are allowed to use their trolling motors. As far as how to handle what happens if they are accused of firing up their big motor, that is yet to be determined. I will keep everyone posted. We want to handle this in the most fair way to everyone and we also want to do our best to meet all regulations and to encourage compliance with regulations. At the same time, I am going to spend my time on the water fishing during this tournament as opposed to watching for people using non compliant motors. Sound fair enough to everyone?
Here are our updated regulations. See everyone on the 23rd!

David on the new regulations its limited to 25 boats? I was planning on fishing this should I pre register to make sure I get in? Thanks
Hi Eric,
You can if you would like to but I am thinking there will be around 10 boats that show up. 15 at the max. If you would like to pre register, shoot me an email at dparnicky@gmail.com and I will give you my contact information. I really don't anticipate anyone not getting in though. Anyone (including you now) that has told me they will be attending either on here or in person gets first priority. We now have 8 confirmed teams. Sorry I have not been more formal about handling this tournament but this is the first year I have ever run a tournament and I also mainly have the intention of running a fun tournament for anyone that shows up. I am looking forward to seeing you there!

Speaking of making this tournament a fun way to end the season, I thought it would be fun to get food and drinks as a group after the tournament is over. What do you all think? Would anyone be up for this? I understand many people will be in a rush to get home but if a few people were free aftwerwards I thought this might be a good idea. There are lots of good restaurants in the Bellingham area.
Ok sweet I was excited to fish this and wanted make sure we got in. I am open to drinking heavily after the tournament too.
Right on! I have been discussing this with a couple people and we think Bob's Burgers at Barkley Village might be the best way to go. It should be a fun day!
