Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

So now that the bass fishing season is starting to slow down for many anglers, I thought it would be interesting to revisit everyone's goals for 2010 to see which you met and which you were not able to meet.  Here is my rundown for 2010. I met 50% of my goals this year.  I hope to meet more goals in 2011!

1) Force myself to keep a DETAILED journal entry for every day I am on the water in 2010!!! I start this every year and only actually do it for a month or two.
Fail- I failed epically at this one.  I didn't even log a single fishing trip this year!

2) Make more trips to Washington and Sammamish this year.
Fail- 5 trips to Washington and 2 to Sammamish.  I would consider this one a fail as well even though I did much better at each lake when I did get around to fishing them than I did in 2009.

3) Catch a largemouth on an 8" + swimbait.
Success- I got a largemouth on an 8" Huddleston Deluxe Trout.  I also got a couple smallmouth on an 8" Tru Tungsten Trout custom painted by Black Dog Lure Company in a Kokanee pattern (You would be surprised would you can stumble into online sometimes!).

4) Catch a smallmouth on the King Craw.
Fail- I threw this bait exclusively for 15 solid hours in October and got two bites and 0 hookups on it.  I did get some nice largemouth on it during the spring though.

5) Gain more confidence in frogs for summer largemouth.
Success- I had some great days this summer on local largemouth lakes with the Black and Red River2Sea BullyWa frog.

6) Gain more confidence in punching the slop for summer largemouth.
Fail-  I just didn't get around to trying this enough this year.  I tried it for one day and didn't land any fish in doing so.

7) Add 5 new baits I have never caught a fish on to the "confidence list" of dropshot lures for smallmouth.
Success - Panic Minnow Dropswim, Smallie Beaver, Poor Boy's Goby, 6" Roboworm Zipper Shaking Worm, Jackall SuperPintail

8) Get in a habit of fishing tubes more frequently again.
Success- I had some of my best days on Banks and the Columbia River this year fishing the plain old boring Green Pumpkin Tube.

Good post David. Here is a post from January that I did about goals. http://www.wafish.com/group/bassfishing/forum/topics/goals-for-2010
A bunch of guys listed goals, and it would be pretty interesting to see how they did at them. Mine went like this:

1. Win something: a club tourny, an open, or even big fish of a tourny.
Fail: Best finish of the year was 4th. Still, I had a pretty decent year.
2. Replace all the carpet and seats in my boat.
Fail: The year isn't over yet though, this is gonna be a project for this winter.
3. Learn a few new lakes
Success: I learned a bunch of new spots on lakes that I fish regularly, thanks mostly to structure scan. I didn't get to fish too many new lakes, but I am happy with what I learned on Washington, Samamish, Moses, Riffe, Tapps and Potholes.
4. Catch a 6lb LM and a 5lb SM.
Fail: Best smallie was 4.59, and I hardly fished LM all year. Best was mayby 4?
5. 75 days on the water.
Still working on it! I think I'm in the 40s, so 75 is out of reach.

I was actually gonna repost this topic in the next few weeks, you beat me to it.
This was my goal list...
1. Catch my first bass on a TW Swimmer!
Failed. I threw it at Whatcom and got nothing and in the bass ponds and got nothing.
2. Fish in at least 2 tournaments.
Accomplished. I think I fished in like 14 including 2 major tourneys!
3. Continue to get better at jig making and catch a bass on every new jig color I make.
Accomplished. Since I caught fish on every one I threw in the water as far as I remember.
4. Not have a fish break me off! This happened 3 times last year 1 nice Smallie and 2 Salmon.
Failed. One of the 3 Coho I hooked in the Sound this year broke me off under the boat.
5. Join WA Bass Association Club
Accomplished.
6. Catch a new PB over 7.2lb Largie and 5lb Smallie
Failed. Biggest Largie was like 6.2
7. Build confidence with the Dropshot
Accomplished. I am more confident and have my setups dialed in. Have a handful of baits that I feel like when I throw them on the DS they will produce quality and quantity.
Well goals for me dramatically changed this year with my illness. I am usually a 100 days a year on the water guy and was lucky to get out 35.
Goals accomplished for me were.
Being physically able to fish the Montana Divisionals. I had seriously thought I wouldn't be able to. I did really bad at the event. ( It was the one I wanted more than any event to do well ).
Learning how to fish better with fewer prefish days on the water. I had very few prefish days this year and learned how to maximize my time on the water. This was accomplished by fishing faster and eliminating water much quicker.
Making the BASS state team. I had 4 good days on the water for this series.
The biggest accomplishment this year had to be the improvement of the mental game. Wasn't really anything specific I had planned or thought about until my illness. But as the season went I approached my fishing differently from the mental aspects and really had some growth mentally, which translated into some great results for me during the year. ( and yes, please hurl all the mentally challenged jokes my way )

The bads this year would be, not spending a 100 days on the water. There were definitely things I didn't get to try or improve on from a technical standpoint. Every year I make it a point to try a new technique, lure, presentation until I master it and feel really confident in it.
So when the time comes to fish it during a tournement I know that I can catch fish with it. Well this year that didn't happen at all.
Not being able to explore and find new water on the different lakes I fish. I always look for new water everytime I go out on every body of water I fish. Most of the time I find a whole bunch of nothing, but it always is productive from the mental side to add to and eliminate water on the lakes I fish. I wasn't able to do this at all this year because of the lack of days on the water.

Mark
1) Spend some time on the water learning to better use my electronics.
Yes - even got a Garmin Oregon GPS and used it, until i dropped it into Whatcom a couple of weeks ago.
2) Include my 6yr old in more of my fishing outings
No - Seems like every time we had an outing planned, he wanted to do something else.
3) Regularly maintain a fishing log.
Hell No - Better luck next time.
4) Join a Bass Club - become more interactive with other anglers.
Yes - I joined Borderline and now I am real active with the new electric only Pond Jumperz club.
5) Work on the following techniques...
a) Drop Shot - yes
b) Crankbaits / Jerkbaits - nope
c) Jigs - yes swim jigs got the most of my attention.
6) Pay off the car so I can start working on getting a better boat.
yes - went from a 10' dinghy to 14' aluminum.
7) Spend more time fishing Whatcom County lakes.
yes with the help of friends, I fished Whatcom and Samish a few more times than planned.
my goals this year are simple :

A)Spend more time pre fishing

B)catch a darn smallie on a swimbait

C)Get well versed with my Jig stick

D)catch a LMB over 5lbs during a tourney !!!

Man o MAN ! As i look back at my goals i can clearly see that i didnt even make it past the 50% Margin of what i hope for this year ..
A) Prefishing : I did get in lots of pre fishing this year and yes it did pay off , i cashed 3 checks this season and practice and pre fishing played a big role .
B) Swimbait : Nope ! Still a virgin on the SB game , I did spend more time tossing those baits this year and i know it just a matter of time . I have to remind David P that "you promised me a SB fish on whatcom" ..lol
C) Jigs : I did get in more time flip'n & pitching but its still a slowwww process .
D)Catch a 5lb greenie in a tourney : Well i had my chance and i blew it , It happend on Riffe lake during the qualifiers . The memory is still burned in my head , I made cast to the pumpstation and i got bit on the fall , I set the hook and that LMB came right up to the surface and shook her head twice then spit my hook out like she had a mouth full of grizzly chew :-( lol
Mainly had 2 goals and failed to connect on either.
1.Try dropshotting. I'm not sure what happened here....I think I lack patience and the fact that I have no clue as to what I'm doing.
2. A 6lb smallie. I didn't even come close.I'd be lucky if I caught a 3.
With the cold weather now, maybe I need to start working on goal #1
That's the beauty of dropshotting, Kevin. You don't need to have a clue what you're doing to catch fish. As a matter of fact, the less you do, often the better your success.

Ask Parnicky about the book reading pattern.

HAHA! The book reading pattern is money! I have a friend who likes to go fishing with me from time to time. He is a Western student and brings his homework with him for some odd reason ( I liked to go fishing to escape from homework!). I tell him cast here, cast there, there's a fish under the boat drop your bait now and he pays no attention. He just casts his dropshot behind the boat, holds the rod in one hand and whatever book he is studying in the other and drags his dropshot behind the boat at whatever speed I am moving the boat at while I fish. He pays no attention to his bait at all and sadly outfishes me almost every time I take him fishing. More proof of how technical of a technique dropshotting is!!

Thanks for humoring me on the book reading pattern, David. Classic!!!

Speaking of the dropshot rig, I heard rumor there is a new shirt that recently hit the market....
Just arrived today!

HAHAHA!! Nice! I want one of those shirts!! I plan on keeping it in the boat and forcing anyone who steps foot on my boat with their dropshot rod to wear it. Hopefully it will shame them out of using the dropshot so I can have it all to myself! I am ok with having a guilty conscience if it keeps people from outfishing me in my own boat!!
Im hoping to be selected as there first Prostaffer ! I already got 3 shirts coming my way , i might even have the missy sport it in the bedroom , dont act like im the only one excited ...lmfao
