Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Anyone going to have the stones to make it out sometime this month? It's cold, but you never know... I think I'll be making a trip to Sammamish this weekend if the weather allows, if not than I'll be out the weekend after christmas hopefully trying out some new toys.

The day before Christmas I am off, and that satuday I may try to get out. I have to, I'm not working and my GF is so its a given. Hoping weather is a little better then.
I went out this past Saturday and of course, from the dumb shore. Checked out Magnuson park as it got dark and Lake Union. Zero, Zip, Nada, but I knew that going in as I tried to find the deepest water I could.

Did I mention I forgot my fishing gloves. The skin on my hands got dried and my hands frozen to the bone.

Sometimes I wonder why I bother from the bank this time of year. I guess the only plus is that I know I am not a sissy fair weathered angler (hee hee). :)
Went out last week to the North end of Magnuson Park. I had about an hour or so to kill before work. Started fishing the bottom with a 3/4oz. football head jig with a crawdad. No luck with that so I tried a split Rapala and some plastics that I have had luck with in the past. Still nothin'. Went to a gold #3 Mepps spinner tipped with a half a crawler and started getting hits. Caught (1) 9" rainbow...really skinny. Fished the spinner for another 15 minutes or so then I had to pack up and get going. I'm not much of a bank fisherman but hey it is still better than workin! I've got some time off for the Holidays and will try to take the boat out. I'll write a post if I do. Tight lines.......
Jordan~ Im up to brave the cold with ya, shoot me a call...
UNTILL THEY MAKE A ROD THAT I CAN FEEL BITES ONCE MY HANDS ARE FROZEN , THAN I DOWN FOR A TRIP ..LOL .. Really i dont mind the cold weather , but when the wind is blowing from the north i just cant deal with it .. but none the less im just waiting for things to clear up just a lil more before i go out .. at this point the only thing i can hope for is the weakend after x-mas .. we will see ..

Does ice in the rods guides become an issue out there this time of year? If so, how do you guys overcome this? That is the biggest gripe I have when winter steelheading. With my boat owning buddy having his hands full with the purchase of a new home, I will be stuck on the bank for awhile and if icing becomes too problematic, I may wait until it warms up some.
Noll,
Yes it can be a pain in the butt. To combat this problem i buy one of the small containers of Pam cooking oil in the aerosal can and spray down my guides before and during the fishing trip. This has worked the best for me in the past.
I have thought about guides freezing too, and the PAM idea sounds really good. The idea that came to mind when I thought about it last winter was the use of the spray that you put on your car's windshield that chemically melts the ice.

I have not yet had the chance to try this, but I might tomorrow morning. PAM sounds yummier though.
Back in Michigan where i grew up in the cold elements .. We used "wd-40" on the guids to keep them from freezing up .. It works great , last all day and easy to apply ...

try it out sometimes ...

Thanks! BBD. I will bring some along. Do you ever river fish? I want to target some Nisqually chums. If you can think of a smallie the size of a salmon, that's how a chum fights.

Definitely will be braving the cold.
