Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

How come nobody in Washington has ever put together a big bass tournament like they have out there.  I have seen like the Skeeter Big Bass and the Oakley Big Bass.  Just curious what thoughts are out there. I think it would be fun to have this kind of tourney on a place like Potholes or somewhere that has the potential of bringing in some pigs.  Anyway, like a said, just a thought.  What do you all think about this?

I'm in.... and totally agree that Washington State is competitive in bag weights with most other states. Around 11-12lbs a day just won a guy 43K at the FLW WEstern at Lake Roosevelt yesterday. SOmeone put the tourney on and I'm there!

I think Lake Washington is a good choice.... if a 5 lber wins so what? It was still a competition and the biggest fish won.
Bingo. As long as everyone has to play by the same rules, a big fish tourney works anywhere, anytime. Its also the only chance in hell I'd ever have to win a tourney...lol.... All you need is one big bite!

The Big Bass Blast's on Lake Washington were awesome! Im sure Roy, and his dad feel the same way... like I've stated in a previous post a while back, I would fully support such an event.

Yep, we have had Big Bass tourneys in the past; both Ron and I have won these in the past. They are a blast. I recall at least two on Lake Washington, and one on Potholes and one at TriCities. Unfortunately they did not draw the numbers of anglers necessary to make them the success they are in other parts of the country.

Big Bass events depend on high turnout to be successful. The idea is that everyone is competitive, as anyone may catch the single biggest bass of the day which is perceived to be easier than catching a huge limit. This idea is even more attractive when hourly prizes are given for the top 3 bass weighed in that particular hour (which can be done on lakes with a central weigh-in location like Lake WA).

Marketing the event to all anglers is the key. In the past only the regular tourney guys showed up with a few additional anglers who heard radio promos or tackle shop promos. Unfortunately many of the club anglers didn't participate for whatever reason; likely because they were unaware far enough in advance to work the event into their busy schedule.

I say bring them back.

ciao,
Marc

So when was the last time somebody put on an event like this? Second, who is it that put these on? I was out of the bass fishing world for several years, that is up until 2007, and I don't ever recall hearing about events like these. Like Marc says, marketing the event so more people knew about it would make a huge difference in the turnout.
Actually Dana Ingalls won the last big bass event held in this area. Yamaha motor was the first place prize and he won it with a 5lb smallie I believe.

The last one I remember was on May 15th 2004. I believe Ron Hobbs Sr. won it and Jr. came in second. I do not remember who put it on. If I remember right one of the local radio stations co-sponsored the event and did a fair amount of on air advertising about it. After some further research I did find a post on Gamefish.com relating to it. here is a copy of it.

Fished the Big Bass Blast today. My first time to fish this and the
first time to be on Lake Washington in a month. I ended up cacthing 2
fish one was 2.96 and the second was 3.28. That was enough to get me
a decent standing. I wasnt going to fish then a buddy wanted me to
fish it with him so I did. I wasnt to sure of how the rules worked in
this set up. It is unlike any other tournament that I have ever been
to. I had a great time and anyone who wants to start tournament
fishing this is the place to start. Lots of prizes and money given
out. A great person and fishermen won the event with a 6 something
large mouth. Ron Hobbs Sr. and Jr. did very well. Sr. won it and Jr.,
was second. Good job guys. My fish all came in water about 8 feet
deep of a drop shot with a sniper snub (brown and black flake) and a
white senko. Total amount of fish for the day was 6 or 7. I only
weighed in the 2 and 3 lber. Good luck to you all.

I was just talking to my buddy who works over at Mardon and they are having a big bass big walleye combo tournament on October 8-9. Bring in your 3 biggest bass and walleye and see how they size up. I REALLY wish I could go to this tournament but I am back in school and very limited on the weekends I can travel. They do exist though a slight variation...
The first one was won with a 6+ largie and Harvey Leonard took 2nd with a 6+ smally. The Second one Paul Hall won with a 6+ largie, then Dana Ingalls then me and then again me (2 total) then my dad won the last one (3 wins out of the same boat). They also had a big fish tourney at Potholes and at the Columbia River. Marcantonio won at Potholes and I forget who won at Tri cities. My dad and I both won 150 horsepower along with Dana Ingalls Yamaha motors. Bob Higbee and fishing and hunting news put these events on.

The event my father won was probably the most exciting for me he caught a 6+ largie off the back deck and I had the 2nd 3rd and 4th biggest fish! That was a great day of fishing. If we could of combined our fish for the day we would have had like a 26# stringer! That is world class!
