Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I have been throwing an inline double buzzer on my GLoomis MH spinnerbait rod with 15lb CXX flouro. My most awesome guide Dr Bess put me on my first buzzbait fish this year. I just never fished them that much before. The one I got came when I dragged the thing over a log and the LM pounced as soon as the bait re-entered the water. It was a GIANT (almost 3lbs)
What buzzbaits do you guys like? I have several different kinds but haven't used them all yet. Has anyone used the Cavitron yet? Has anyone used those little finesse style buzzbaits?
What combos do you guys like?
Single blade, in-line double blade, side by side double blade?
Black, White, Chartruese/White?
What about trailers? I know trailer hooks are highly recommended but what about a rubber trailer? Would it be a good idea to thread the trailer onto the trailer hook shank?
Rod and line?
Are there certain types of cover you think they work best around?

Strike King Titanium, this be the other. Stays afloat better in the sloop.

and if you so please on going bigger I have some nucka ones, that Im dying to order.
Tell him about how this buzzbait breaks after a couple fish, at least thats what I've heard.
I just can't seem to stop throwing the Booyah Clacker ! I have a few colors, but I always go with BLACK. Once you go black, well.... I have also had good luck with the "potholes buzzbait", its a double blade with a 2 floats on it. It really makes some good noise. I'm using 17 lb line on mine, co-poly. I always use a trailer hook. I've used zoom split tail trailers on mine, same with my spinnerbaits.
I have used the Cavitron, IMO I'd rather have NOISE than a bubble trail.

I want to know what type of Buzzbait Tag uses. If theres a Giant buzzbait on the market that he's using, I'm going to feel like I've been wasting my time all these years with the generic styles.

I'd say Buzzbaits are my favorite bait.

The Potholes double buzzer works well, but a couple big fish 5+ and those cheap wires are so out of tune you wont believe. I found some good double buzzers from Cabelas and they are a bit better built.
I throw mine on mono or braid because those lines dont sink and the point is to keep it buzzing the surface from the get go on a long cast. Also mono has some stretch and since the hook set on a buzzbait I find needs a bit of a delay like a lot of topwater baits it helps keep me from being quick on the swing. I have only had luck with White and Chartruse, but I will have to try the black now Chris has mentioned it works. The rod I use in nothing special a 6 and a half medium heavy baitcasting rod works fine for me.
I like to throw them on water with weeds just a few inches below the surface. It rises those big largies out of the weeds and they exploed on it. Buzzing it past cattail clumps, beaver huts... it all makes for excitement when they are crunching on buzzbaits.

THANKS Eric we got the motor mounted and working well. We'll report anything exciting with them baits. :)

Great topics lately, Eric. I love throwing buzzbaits. As much as I love the frog, nothing beats a wide open buzzbait bite. My biggest fish in Washington State came on a shad colored buzzbait in open water, at the end of a flat, where it breaks from 12 to 20 feet.

My favorite buzzbait is the Cavitron. They are very durable due to their quality components, plane quickly and have a great sound (squeak) right out of the package. You can retrieve them nice and slow which can be very important at times. I also like the holes drilled in the blades that leave a nice bubble trail. Like Chris, I run black the majority of the time but also run White, Chartreuse/White and Ghost Minnow on occasion. I like the Strike King Double Take when I need some extra noise and the Revenge Buzzbaits for a slightly different sound. Chris, I throw an old VPR with a huge plastic 4 blade prop and clacker when I am after a big bite. If you can find these they are big, loud and just plain obnoxious.

I like to always use a trailer hook where I can get away with it but I opt for a plastic trailer by itself in heavy vegetation or nasty wood cover. I use a piece of a 6" or 7" Senko on the shank of the hook if I am using a trailer hook. This adds a little additional weight for casting. I use a variety of plastic trailers on my buzzbaits. I like to experiment with beavers, brush hogs, lizards, split tails, big grubs, etc.

I prefer a high speed reel to plane the lure immediately after it enters the water and a med/heavy action rod. I use a 6'6" for precision casting applications. I will throw a 7 footer if I need a little extra distance and a 7'6" flipping stick for pitching a buzzbait or making long casts in open water. 20# CXX and 50 lb. braid are my lines of choice.

Any cover is good buzzbait cover if the conditions are right and they are eating it. Man, I want to go fishing now.....
The most memorable fishing days of my life all have one thing in common...a buzzbait. I personally like the Srike King titanium. I really like white and I usually fish it with a split tail trailer. I really like it in the spring as the pads are just starting to pop but if I had to pick my favorite type of cover it would definitely be wood. Specifically any log that is laying perpendicular to the bank. Running that thing right down the edges and bumping the wood from time to time almost makes me flinch thinking about it. I will often times fish it earlier in the seasson than it should be fished and later in the day than it should be fished. I really love those super humid overcast days when it is almost uncomfortable to be outside. I fish it on a 7 foot medium heavy with 17 pound mono. In the summer I will go the lake around 4 am and fish until 7:30 before work with one rod and one bait.
One morning in early October, I was meeting a friend and I got to the boat launch a little too early while it was still dark. I had some time to kill so I parked my truck by the edge of the ramp and illuminated the water with my headlights. I made a cast with a buzzbait and began retrieving it slowly right up the middle of the ramp. A 7 pounder ate the buzzer practically at my feet. I basically set the hook and it was on the beach. That woke me up in a hurry. I think buzzbaits are addictive because the bites can be so violent and explosive.
I think this was the other way around Tag, in your dream your landed the 7lb'er and then woke up.

The Strike King Buzz King has done well for me over the years. Looks like there are a bunch more to try though.
Thanks for the tips Tag and others. I saw the strike king double buzz on tv and will have to pick one up. I know what you mean about the wires on the potholes buzz PJ, but I still like it. It will break after maybe 10 fish, but its worth it. The trick I do is bend the double wires closer together so the blades hit each other, super loud ! Trust me, bending the wires makes all the difference.
Tag, I will be researching the VPR, never heard of it and I want one from your description :)
Chris,

Let me know next time you and Suzy-Q are coming up this way. I only have a handful, but I will gladly give you one to try out. I don't have time to fish so someone might as well be catching fish on it.
