I have really enjoyed throwing a speed trap this year, but because it only weighs 1/4oz I usually dont get as much distance as I'd like. Do any of you guys have any tips or tricks that help you cast light lures father on baitcasting gear?

I have used the little Chronarch 50 for throwing the smaller baits but sometimes you just have to go to a spinning reel.
Tell us more, what reel are you using? Line type and pound test? Rod length and action? Given this I'm sure you will get a more informed answer. As all ready stated, sometimes you have to use that spinning rod.
I fish that same bait a lot in the spring and I throw it on a 7' medium Shimano crucial and I take the brakes compeltely off on my reel. I think the rod has as much to do with castability as the reel but on a 1/4 oz. bait you will have to get used to being wide open on the reel.
I agree with JP. I think you need just the right combo and you need eliminate as much resistance in the reel as possible. The Chronarch50 has a little spool so it casts the little baits better than a 100 or 200 size reel.
The biggest problem with throwing little baits on my Chronarch is that a small headwind screws everything up. If you have the wind at your back they zing out there a mile but if it is reversed you are going to backlash a bunch and/or not get much distance.
At least with a spinning reel you can be more consistent.

clean and lube your reel.
spool up with the smallest diameter mono.

if you be brave - turn off all the brakes.
if you be unbrave - keep 1 brake on.

watch the lure fly.

word of warning - dont get into casting contests with anyone, as others WILL get hurt.

if that doesnt get the distance you want, i would suggest getting a longer rod, or atleast a rod that will load properly with that specific weight.
All the tips are great, as stated before, I think you really need to find the right set-up for the baitcaster, some of my reels just dont cast a light lure as well, whether is be the weight of the spool or what, but if you can get a drilled spool and a small spool (such as Delay said 50 size) that will be your best best. The higher quality of reel will usually give you the least resistance on the spool so u can cast farther with the lighter trap.

Also, if you like the small trap, try adding Storm Suspend-Strips on it, it will increase the weight and should not alter the side to side action, but it will suspend or sink instead of float.
Joel,

I'm not a prostaffer, just a fan, try "Xtreme Reel +" it is a dry lube(like wd40 but not oily and no residue or smell) that you use inside your reel. I am not easily sold on any of these types of things but the proof is in the use. You will double your casting distance with most light baits on a bait casting reel. Haven't used it on spinning gear, but i think its space in the market is with the bait casters. If I know I am going to do a lot of casting or pitching, I will lube each reel before the night before. But on my Pfluger presidents it only take about 30 second to pop them open drop a few drops on the spindles and bearing areas and watch out for that second cast...... cast lightly so you don't unspool your reel or get a massive backlash. Really works.

Great tip Steve, might have to try the stuff if I ever cast the tiny lures.

Nick, I've never seen a Rattle Trap that floated.
Hey chris , I own two floating Traps .. I picked them up down @ BPS in nashville years ago(over 9) ..They are slick in the water , they work simular to your floating rapalas just without a lip .. I stop using them down there because the strippers would just go crazy on them .. iv thrown them a few times up here but not much .. To be honest , whenever im throwing topwaters they never cross my mine (ony got two), but i will tie one up for sammy this wkend and let you know , only because im competing against nick !!! lol

Try using a longer, more limber rod, smaller reel and applying kvd's line and lure conditioner.

Hope it helps.

I use a 7 1/2 foot steelhead hot shot rod with that bait and I can cast it a great distance at least for a crank. I don't think I could cast it any further on a spinning reel unless I was using braid.
If you are really into your reel, you could have it "Supertuned" by a reel mechanic and increase casting distance and reduce the friction on the inside of the reel. I have seen it as cheap as $40 to have it done. The before and after numbers show great improvements in distance. Just a thought.
