Just curious to see if anyone has tried casting their own jigs and if they have had any luck.
One thing to look out for is using wheel weights vs pure lead ingots. You must have good ventillation when trying to melt wheel weights! The wheel weights have grease, adhesive, and also contain tin, which makes them harder and raises the melting point. The material that burns off of the wheel weights is extremely toxic. Just make sure you cast outdoors with ventillation!
Best bet is to try and find pig lead or pure 99.9% lead ingots to use for casting.
There is some good info on Do-It Molds website.
I've poured a hundred or so jigheads and they came out pretty well. The softer lead definately pours easier and cleaner.
You want to pour a few "practice" jigheads to get the mold up to temperature, then the castings will come out perfect.
There are some other molds out there for flipping and swim jigs. Skirts and tools are also available for making jigs.
Just thought I would throw this out there to see if anyone else is working on their own baits
I pour for myself quite a bit ... including football heads, tube heads, drop shot weights, shakey heads to name a few. I just lose to many baits too not do it and it is nice to choose what hooks you want to use. It is important that you try to find quality lead. Wheel weights do contain antimony and are not the best but I have used them.
One trick I have learned is I have an old melting pot that I melt all my lead in first. I then skim all the garbage off of the top and pour that lead into my good pot. It seems to help in my case anyway. You can also flux lead that is not good quality to get it to pour better. This does create a lot of smoke and odor so it is best to do outside or next to a window.
If anyone knows what type or % lead they use in tire balancing weights. i have an ton of those weights. If they do not make complete junk weights let me know
