I was thinking of buying one too but once I realized that I had to purchase another component to get the side and bottom imaging I went with a Humminbird.
Read the Lowrance vs Hummingbird thread, it will give you a lot of details of all the capabilities of both from the experts themselves!
Where can I find that thread? Thanks.

I'm sorry if by saying the 'H' word I have opened something up.  I was just saying what I found and trying to help out...
Thanks Steve. Someone must not be getting any on V-Day. Go play with your fishing gear. It will make you feel better.

You need to simmer down there chainsaw. In the Lowrance vs. Humminbird thread you will find what everyone said about the unit you are asking about. Just ignore the Humminbird part.

Anthony is asking about the new Elite 5dsi, there is nothing else to buy with it, it is a downscan unit only. Not sure if they are shipping them yet but it will be a good option to compare traditional sonar to a down scan image at an affordable price.
Sorry there Bassturd... Well, IMO, the I wouldn't waste my money on a unit that just provides downscan as I think the actual side scan is what really helps and is worth the money. I would save your cash and either get a normal unit or one that does sidescan and everything else. I own a HDS10 and can tell you I have learned so much more about the areas I fish by the detail it shows from SI... Does that help or is to to f ing complicated?

Way to complicated beer is the answer but what was the question

The new Elite DSI units are an option for those who do not want the traditional 2D imaging and also do not want to buy a more expensive unit that has capabilities they don't need.  If you are a current HDS owner, these DSI units are not marketed for you.

If you are an occasional angler, or simply someone who wants a sonar that displays drawings that make it easy to tell you are over a brushpile that is likely to hold crappie or bass, or a rock ledge with walleye, and interpreting regular sonar it not your interest, then this is a great unit for you.

This unit is downscan type sonar only; no regular sonar and no side scan capability, and is not marketed to people who want those features (the HDS units do these functions).

Hope this helps clear things up.

ciao,
Marc
