PERSONAL REVIEW DOBYNS VS LOOMIS FROM TACKLE TOUR FORUM MUST READ!!

I read this and found it pretty helpful but I ended up buying a DX704 and a GLX 804 so I guess I'm not choosing sides!

I like the Dobyns lineup of rods alot as well as the Loomis but to be fair, Topic #2 is not an apples to apples comparison at all. He's talking about a $350 Champion Extreme vs. a $250 Gloomis DSR rod. Now if you were to compare an SMR822 GLX vs. the Dobyn's Champion Extreme that might be a better comparison.

Jordan,

This discerning buyer is very thorough and he does some interesting independent reviews.  He is not on staff with Dobyns.  He also reviewed the DX 744, which is one of Gary's biggest sellers, for those interested. http://www.tackletour.net/TTForums/viewtopic.php?f=57&t=44706

My Question would be to the local Dobyns Pro-staff of Matt Barlow, Kevin Jones, Dez. Do you feel these rods help you catch more fish than a guy fishing a G.Loomis or a Lamiglass or the new Gary Loomis blank the Homewater series by Fetha Styx? And if so why? And why do all rod companies target G.loomis to compare their rods too? Is it because they have set the standard? As most anyone knows Dobyns won most of his boats and $ using a G.loomis. My last question is why people are not supporting our local built in the USA companies such as Lamiglass and G.loomis Homewater Fetha Styx over a Korean made rod?

good points all......

maybe barlow could post a picture of himself carressing dobyn's rod, i'd like to see that.

Hi Mike,

For sure, I agree he does a great job in reviewing the two rods. And he's definitely right that Dobyns service is tough to beat, not to mention Gary is a great guy and I really enjoyed BS'ing with him when he came up! I'm not putting down the Dobyn's rods at all, I have a few and love them. I also love the Loomis rods, I just wanted to point out that I'd be interested in seeing a review with like price points/series rods in topic 2. The 854/744 review is a much better comparison and a good read.

I have these two exact same rods (DSR 822 and the SF 702 both from 3 Rivers), and concur with the review, the Dobyns is my choice.

The guide system is indeed that much better. The G-Loomis is now reserved for guests to use, its a very good rod, but it is a distant 2nd for me.

Hurry up and have another sale 3 Rivers! I missed the Dobyns event due to business travel.

Jordan,

I certainly agree that when someone goes shopping for a rod (or is reading other's research), they need to compare sticks in their price range, compare apples to apples, and choose the rod THEY like the best.   This person's reviews are educational with respect to things to consider when comparing rods, regardless of his final recommendation.  Chris' points are worth considering as well, all these rods will put fish in the boat, and unfortunately not all of them are manufactured, in whole or part, in the USA, or by American companies, including Loomis.  I agree, Gary Loomis (he sold his company in 1995 to Shimano Inc.) is considered to have revolutionized the fishing industry with innovations in graphite materials and rod production and has set the standard for rod companies.  G. Dobyns wanted to design his own line of bass specific rods, he initially partnered with Lamiglas , another great Washington (and still privately-owned company) for staff, distribution, and warranty support, while he concentrated on design, promotion, and management issues.  The history of manufacturing in America is a topic that could be debated for days, and while I don't know, I suspect that in order for Dobyns to be a profitable American entrepeneur, he had to look overseas.
