Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I am curious about the upper portions of Potholes Reservoir.  I am planning a bass fishing trip to eastern WA.  I have a fishing kayak and can fish really hard to get to water.

I circled the NW arm of Potholes in this picture Potholes.png.  Does this area of the lake hold bass (or any fish)?  If the lake level drops enough, probably in the winter, do these areas get dry?  Assuming I can get to it, does it make any sense to try and fish this part of Potholes?  I have never been to Potholes, so I know basically nothing about the lake.

Cool, that is encouraging news.  I will probably pick an area in the upper part of the circle, and move down.  Does this part of the lake ever go dry?  I realize that does not mean the fish won't move in when it refills, but I am curious about the lake.

If you put a sail on your kayak, and mount some ice skates on the bottom of it.....you could cover that area on a windy day.

I could be wrong, but what I'm trying to say, is that I think that entire area is an ice field right now.

There is water in that area year round, but there is no way of navigating thru it during the later summer and fall. Your circle is covering a huge area. As the water drops most of it turns into a few small landlocked ponds. Air boat or ambitiously hiking in are really your only options.
That looks like the result of a guy going for it! How did you get it floating again?
Pj and I have been there and done that a couple times out there now...if your not stuck your not trying on Potholes=-)

That's pretty funny stuff Joel.

Funny But True! I've never stuck it as bad as that guy and I've never stuck it in July.  Only late August/September!

Dana I agree totally.  Even in the 8 years ive been going there regularly ive noticed the consistently higher water level and it seems as if the lake rarely gets as low as it did in years past. I think this with the habitat box project on top of it is making it easier for juvenile predators like bass and walleyes to survive as well as pan fish.  I have never seen as many perch on that lake as I did this year.

I meant in the summer, probably should have mentioned that.

Thanks for that info, its good to hear.

P.J.,

Years ago (when you were still in diapers) the water drawdown occurred much earlier in the year at Potholes. By mid July you couldn't even make it to the power lines up Crab Creek in a bass boat. The new water management has kept the water level higher for a longer time. I contribute this to being one of the reasons that Potholes has rebounded and has been a greatly improved fishery. The higher water level has allowed the juveniles to stay back in the thicker willow bushes and grow to a healthier size. This has improved the survival rate, before they start drawing down the water level and forcing the juveniles to become more vulnerable to predators.

Zack,

With a kayak, you might want to consider making a float trip down the Winchester Wasteway.
