Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Mr. Hobbs made a great suggestion for a forum topic. Which bait(s) have you been chomping at the bit all winter to get wet this season?

I mentioned in Ron's recent blog that I am really looking forward to chucking the 13" MS Slammer Snake this Spring in hopes of fooling a big pre-spawn female or two. Another bait I can't wait to fish is a giant chunk currently being designed by Mr. Daniel Bavery. Coupled with a big mop skirt jig, this combination will be one hearty meal for a fat lady looking for some protein. When you get bit on this chunk, it will be the kind of fish you are looking for.

Looking forward to reading the responses.....

I've been itching to get my damn Hudds on my line. Lately Ive been tryin to figure out this smallmouth myth(they dont exist), so I have not thrown it as much as I want so far. I did get a crushing blow on an ROF12 a few weeks ago on Big Lake that made my heart stop, missed the fish of course. Fo sho the Hudds is what Im lookin fwd to throwing. Of course the chunks Im designing are a very close 2nd. I got that 13" MS also, man I cant wait. I did real well on the 9" last year, cant wait for the 13!!!!!!!!
Ive Been stocking up on swimbaits! Haven't even thrown any yet but this is a year of firsts for me as far as bass fishing goes. This is the first year I tried winter fishing and its been AWESOME! This is also going to be the first year I try swimbaits. I have 3 swimbaits I am very excited to throw. The catch 22 by Castaic in the trout pattern (for both largies and smallies), The Hudd. Deluxe for largies, and I got a couple River 2 Sea S Wavers in Kokanee that I think are going to be dynamite on big summer smallies. I still have a mental hurdle to leap across to throw big swimmers though. All my swimbaits are 6-8" as I cant make myself throw a 10" + swimmer in Washington. Also, in the smallie department I have two baits I can't wait to throw. The first it Tag's King Craw. I finally got a 25 pack of these at the Freeze your Bass blast. The second is a bigger flickshake that Jackall released this year. I slayed the summer smallies on the 5.8 inchers last year but had issues with catching too many little fish. Now they have a bigger 6.8" version that is bulkier too, I got them in a Green Pumpkin Candy color that looks awesome! This is a very fun bait to skip docks with and fish open water with as well with the wacky jighead. The only problem is the fish rip them to shreds and a pack of them only lasts half an hour at times.
In relative terms, I am very new to the sport of fishing and even newer to bass fishing. I have a long way to go. This year will be the 3rd for me. I look forward to learning more about fishing jigs the most. Second would have to be shared by hard baits like cranks/jerkbaits. The technique/bait I have the most anxiety towards using is any flipping or pitching bait. When I fish solo it is from a pontoon and sitting makes this tough for a rookie but I have a few areas close to the house that is looking like perfect testing grounds and the spots to cut my teeth with some punching weights and plastisol.
Great topic and the more I watch this site the more insight I gain. Now if I only fished tourneys I might even meet some of you Hookerz.
Looking forward to throwing swimbaits this spring on spanaway again. I usually just fish castaics, but i might try some mattlures baits this year. Gotta love those lakes that get over planted with trout.
Ya this year I want to throw my custom spinner bait I’ve been developing. I can’t give any specifics on it just yet I first have to see how it dose. I am hopping to try it at some tournaments and them sell them if they work.
Can't pick just one...

But I'm most excited for frog season to roll around again! I'll be sticking mostly to the trusty snagproof bobbys perfect frog but this year I will be experimenting more with other brands, and a few JDM frogs as well (evergreen, fish arrow, etc).

Will also be partaking in the mop jig+giant chunk action as well.

Swimbaits: Mattlures hard gills. Tested em a week ago and the action looks good! I also got a 13" snake bait I am excited to fish as well. Plus I got quite a few other big baits that need some teeth mark on em...

I am looking forward to throwing a couple baits. Swimbaits wise, Mattlures Hardgill, and the weedless Huddleston. I also am looking to stick some big ol pigs with a big ol jig (trailer) haha, keep on workin hard Dan. I also can't wait to use the Netbait mad paca's, I think this bait could take over my brush hogs. Last but not least, use my Kgm King K's a little more often.
seems like everyone has the swimbait itch, but I am looking forward to frog fishing this summer. Also my bait to try this year would be the swim jig.

For me it is never about a particular bait. But a particular technique. I not much of a particular lure / magic lure kind of guy. But I tend to look at what I am weak at or don't have much confidence in and work on that. This year I will be working on swimming a jig. I will try 3 or 4 different brands and throw it all season long while fun fishing and prefishing to develope the skills, the when to throw it to be productive and confidence in it so when the conditions present itself I will have confidence that it will produce fish for me.

I'm with you Troy, that hollow body frog on the matted/heavy cover would be my pick. Paired with 65lb braid and a frickin broom stick loomis, can't wait!

Mark Mad,
I am with you on perfecting new techniques that I don't use much. Mine would be the shakey head. I see the need for perfecting this on pressured or clear waters especially. I know a few guys that absolutely put the wood on them with it and I want to have that in my arsenal for when the conditions are right.
Top water is always exciting, as are any bites. I have a package of KGM swimbaits and Yamamoto swimbaits, plan on learning how these will produce. Jigs are the one bait that is always exciting as they produce big fish.
Its funny, it starts as an itch, then quickly develops into a rash. Then it scabs over, then it itches more, then you scratch, then its a rash again, yadda yadda yadda you get the idea... Its a nver ending circle for most. Get one pig and you will be at Rite Aid buying anti itch cream!
