Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

A friend of mine and I fished Tapps and caught a couple of smallies from Tapps. As he cleaned one of the fish a very large white worm started pressing out of the fishes anus. It was a white/pearl in color. Not a plastic worm a real one. Needless to say that fish is going in the garden. I've got some video on my cell. If I can transfer it to my computer I will. And show what it looked like. Anyone ever have this experience from Tapps or any other lake? Is it something to worry about? Thanks, T.

I totally agree Todd you should take some fish to eat it is not going to hurt Tapps but, don't advertise that you buried it in the garden, actually it is a very bad thing to put in the bass section, guys in here are hardcore catch and release. It is probably best to keep it under your hat. Selective harvest does all our resources good and I whole heartedly agree, but as I said all fish have worms some are just bigger than others.

If we had seen the worm prior to putting it in the live well I/we surely would have released it. And just a thought here. If we/you or others don't take some fish then you know what happens? The lake gets stunted. Crap loads of small fish that are very where. You can see it now with the perch and the bass in Tapps. Gazillions of 4 inch perch/bass with no bigger ones to catch. Then the lake gets poisoned. Then redone and the cycle starts over. I respect the guys that catch and release. I do it myself. 99% of the time. But,people do have the right to take some fish.Hell I can dig a crappie sandwich or a perch fish fry.Hell back in Wisconsin my family did it every Friday at the local church fish fries. I would expect the same respect from those that catch and release. Tapps has a 10 fish (smallie) take home limit for a reason.Crap loads of Smallies.. My buddy had intended to eat those fish. (2) he kept plus some rock bass. And the one that had the big ass worm in it..well it probably would have died had we let it go. Oh by the way from experience, chicken crap is better fertilizer.

parasites are actually common, including tape worms that get in the intestinal tract. Parasitic worms (even those in the flesh) are not harmful if the meat is cooked. Of course, if it bothers you at all there is always catch and release...

I've seen it in all lakes. I can't think of a fish that doesn't have parasites, they all have them I think it is pretty natural occurence, but I am not a specialist on the matter. I just don't think it is anything out of the norm, maybe you should use cow shit as fertilizer instead of other resources!
I had a four pound smallie at Lake washington with a tape worm a foot long hanging out is ass besides that it was healthy as a horse.

Im curious to know what you are basing this statement on. Again a lot of fish have worms parasites ect and show no ill effects from it.

Like Ron said - this is the wrong forum to hang yourself out there on harvesting and wasting fish. It is not a bad discussion piece, but as he said you are dealing with guys who are religious in their c&r. Most also have an extreme amount of knowledge, so taking your lumps is not a bad thing it's a learning experience.

More than likely the fish would not have died. As others have said it is not uncommon at all to catch fish with parasites this time of year. However most less experienced anglers would not know this and would come to the same conclusion as you did.

Show the vid though it will be interesting.
Parasites don't kill animals. That would not be very smart for the parasite since it would then die. The worm, possibly a tape worm, was in the digestive tract and therefore no harm to the meat, and if it were in the meat, it would die if cooked. Thats why pork (notorious for tape and hook worms) needs to be cooked to 170 degrees F.
I once caught a trout with a gargantuan tape worm wriggling in its gut when I cleaned it. Yes, it probably was the grossest thing ever, but the trout was still delicous. If you need fertilizer snag a carp.
Guys.....There is a fine line between supporting your sport, and being a complete drama queen. I tend to try to err on the side of supporting the sport within the law, and furthermore within the bounds of common sense (ie...only keeping smaller sized fish if you must keep any, and or mortally wounded fish).

If you want this site to stagnate, and for "groupthink" to take over...then by all means....jump this guys shit, and everyone else's who posts something you don't like.

way too many tournament anglers on this site harassing fish during the spawn, that shouldnt be too worried about a guy keeping a 10" incher from tapps or two. Lets keep some perspective.

And as for using the fish as fertilizer.....it happens. As a hunter and fisherman, sometimes you open up your game and find something that is repulsive. I'm going to go ahead and admit to cleaning birds that had "interesting contents" or an infected breast, and decided the garbage can was the best spot for the animal. At least he was resourceful and at least used the carcass for something. If your family wants to eat parasite infested or rotten flesh....then good on you and yours....but don't freak out if someone else doesnt subject themselves.

Not trying light anyone up....but sheesh....give the guy a break. Common sense tells me that Todd isnt bad for the sport, and that some folks might consider analytically thinking before posting negatively.

Excellent read. Good find Dez. I think we have ourselves a bonified conclusion.....: If you and your family can stomach it....then cook thoroughly and all will be well.....If not, then throw it in the garden, but don't tell anyone on the internet because ignorance is bliss.

At the end of the day Todd was the sacrificial lamb, but I think many of us learned something from his trials and tribulation.

We should annoint him Gee-zus of WAFISH!

That is way out of line Snake.
I can tell or tolerate some off color jokes but there has to be some things that are off limits.
Making light of Jesus' suffering is not a good idea in my opinion.
Whether you are a Christian or not, have a little respect.

And if Todd's buddy wants to eat bass and their parasites that is his call, just remember, I heart butter.

I agree, we should not say if we are offended by people because they might feel offended by our being offended and then there will be even more offended people and that is bad because people have feelings and their feelings are real and we need to be more aware of other's feelings but don't talk about our own because we might offend those who offend us even if we point out that they hurt our feelings which are also real but shouldn't be talked about because the other people might get their feelings hurt if we say they offended us.

Like when Snake told everyone that I heart butter. That hurt, A LOT, but I just laughed it off with my big butter loving belly jiggling the whole time because I don't want Snake to have more hurt feelings by mean people who deny they heart butter when it is obvious they do heart butter.
I couldn't have said it better myself.

As many pointed out fish tapeworms (Diphyllobothrium spp.) are common around here. I once fished a lake that is no longer with us, it dried up, we called it Kahlotus becasue it was near that town (many Cougs may recall it), Kahlotus, Washington. The fish in this lake, towards its end, almost all contained a parasite, a white smaller worm that embedded in the meat. As the lake became smaller and smaller each year, and a very large population of fish were all cramped together in the end. You could watch the fishs' health decimate, and easily catch 50 - 100 per day. In anticipation of the eventual fate of the fish, I decided to take home a stringer and have a fish fry for friends. I found nearly every fish had this white parasite embedded in their meat. But the worst part was, the meat just tasted very fishy. Needless to say, we had a pizza party that night. When I tried to get Wa Fish and Game to intervene and transport fish that a local club would catch, they advised that they did not want to transport the unhealthy fish to another lake. The fish also developed another sympton of bad health some have surely seen, a round green algae or fungus of sorts that grows on ther gill plate.

In parts of the world similar roundworms (Ascaris lumbricoides) will infect hiuman populations. I recall seeing one that was about a foot long, 1/2 inch wide, soaking in Formaldehyde in a jar in a Biology classroom. It was found in a roadside drainage ditch, resting near a dead dog that had been hit and ended up in the ditch. The speculation was that it left its host animal, only after it died and could no longer support it.
1) Maybe those parasites are Gods way of telling you to C&R (HAHAHA)

2) People need get thicker skin and quit acting like women by getting butt hurt by any comment they don't agree with. It's called life- Its Not fair, Your not always right, you won't like every single person on this planet and not every single person on this planet will like you. Suck it up, Live with it and enjoy YOUR life with people you enjoy being around.

3) I thought i read something about people finding a 1600 year old bible and there was a 11th Commandment- Thou shalt not catch bass and bring thy home. I could have read it wrong though
