I'm going to share an experience with you guys and I know what most of you think. I wanna here some feedback from you all and just tell me if I'm out of line or nuts!
Most of you know that I fished the Memorial tournament last week. Fun as hell by the way. This area is on the Columbia River and the area I fish is by the mouth of the Okanogan river. As I was traveling up the Okanogan river I couldn't help but notice a giant fishing boat . One that you would see in an area like Puget sound or Alaska. It had huge nets hanging from the sides and all over inside. The boat had large orange flags on it that said Research! I didn't think much of it at first. So for most of you that don't know, there is an amazing Salmon run of Kings and Sockeye . There was at least 100+ salmon boats out in the mouth of the river. Most of which launch out of Brewster. I also launched out of Brewster. When I came in to trailer my boat the fish checker was there at the launch. As we pulled in he said " how did you do?". We said we did pretty good! About fifty or so fish. He said what???? He thought we caught that many Salmon. We told him that we were Bass fishing and asked how everyone was doing out there. He said not worth a damn. 70 boats checked and only one fish caught. We asked whats going on. We used to just knock the hell out of them out here. He asked if we saw the RESEARCH BOAT. We said yeah and he informed us that it was an Indian net boat. The Natives have strung thier nets across the entire mout of the Okanogan and a few other spots in the Columbia and there just arent any fish he said. "They don't have a chance". So I just held it in knowing I can't do a damn thing about it. And then my brother called me tonight and said he went out Salmon fishing out there again and same thing only worse! No fish again and nobody was doing any good. They had the nets drug across the mouth again and there were 9 guys on the boat. 1 Native and 8 white guys. They were pulling the nets in full of fish. They were keeping everything that came in the nets, Bass, walleye, and Salmon. I don't even know what to say. Its sad for one. Pisses me off for two and its just plain bullshit! I understand the history and tradition but to me its just plain raping the waters.
When I grew up there, it wasn't that bad. They didn't have the nets out across the mouth . There was a lot of snagging with giant treble hooks but not the complete destruction that there is now. Honestly, If I had the time I would go take care of that Research boat in the middle of the night. I guess I just respect the fish and water too much. Tell me if I'm out of line or if you agree.

Oh, and if they feel that what they are doing is moral then Why do they have to diguise thier boat as a research boat? I know if I were doing something that pisses everyone off I would quit doing it, not disguise what I was trying to pull off.

I wasn't expecting so many big words from a fishing web site. Some of you guys have one hell of a vocabulary.
You can't tell me that the Colville Tribe has figured out a way to have a 5% mortality of fish caught in nets. I have seen first hand that in any net fishing situation, the #'s are much higher. Also, They damn sure arent letting the Bass and Walleye go back alive when you sit there and watch them for a half hour with no fish going back into the water. They can tell you whatever they want. There are no rules for them and nobody is watching over the operation. Sure they might throw a # like 6000 fish out there , but whos checking and what about the truck beds full of fish they are snagging off of the dam? I have seen them fill the truck beds up, sell them on the side of the road and let the rest just rot away. I don't mind the Natives having an advantage. But if the salmon keep getting abused, we are not going to have any. Then there is going to be some serious finger pointing. My idea would be to make everyone have to fish according to the state regulations but let the Natives have a "No limit" rule. I think that is fair!

I agree with Tag, seems that the "newness" of the new administration is wearing off. Last time I checked it was at about 54%. Down 13% from two months prior. I think people are starting to pull their head out of there ass! Too bad because McCain was a true AMERICAN! F yeah!

Obviously some well thought out comments Calvin. Where did you go to school? The University of Havana?
"Greed" actually a desire to make money which is the driving force behind entrepreneurialism which is the backbone of capitalism. Without the "greedy rich" you wouldn't have a job most likely. Your propagation of class-ism is so dated (60's-70's) that is actually comical. Are you really blaming "the rich" for our problems.
You are right about one thing. We do pay way too much in taxes, the top 2% of the earners in this country pay over 90% of the taxes by the way. Should we punish their success by making it even more? Should we promote your brand of radical egalitarianism? The government is being pushed on us by the liberal Democrats as the solution to all of our problems. This is why they keep trying to make the government bigger and bigger, to act as a nanny for the morons of the world and throw them little freebies while they strip away our rights. Wake up, this giant oversized beaurocracy has been created by big government liberals and is a huge inneffecient joke. If you want it done right put it in the private sector. If you want the economy to grow leave the money in the hands of those who create jobs, don't penalize them for being successful.

X2 on Sessler and DeLay's comments.

A small silver lining is that recent (reputable) polls are showing that a large percentage of Americans have become more conservative since the election of the new administration. This includes liberals, conservatives and moderates. Hopefully people are finally waking up and realizing that our freedoms and liberties are being slowly stripped away. I feel that we, as outdoorsmen and women, are becoming extremely vulnerable and must take a stand.

Cody, please don't sugar coat it. Tell us how you really feel about this issue..... :)

A couple weeks ago I attended a meeting in Brewster put on by Joe Peone, Director of Fish and Wildlife for the Colville Tribe. This meeting was in regards to the Persain sp? boat that was going to be in the mouth of the Okanogan again this year and the Tribes plans. First off the Colvilles are not a treaty tribe, but an executive order tribe. Therefore, they worked some deal with the government and the state to see that their people get their share of the salmon run. They talked and had pictures of what it was like before Wells Dam went in. What I got out of it, was that they will get a percentage of the hatchery fish from now on. The number of fish depends on the predicted return. This year they were entitled to 6000 salmon (I believe chinook). They apparently didn't need that many, so they gave 1000 back to WDFW for our sport fishery. As for the net boat, they only keep hatchery salmon, and all wild salmon are released unharmed. They said with the persain net, that the highest mortality rate for the fish to bew released was 20%, but said more realisticly was 5%, because their figuring their shit out better this year. Also, I asked the question about the releasing of walleye and bass, and they said ABSOLUTELY no bass or walleye will be retained. They also have plans drawn up, that I saw, for a weir to go across the entire Okanogan up river. With this they will divert them into a channel and pick exactly which fish they want. It's going to be installed 3/4 mile south of Malott, and they said that if a boat wants to pass through, they will have a place where they can do so. Sad to say, but this whole mess is here to stay. Also, Joe Peone said the persain boat will not be fishing during the week (starting today) before the Brewster Salmon Derby.
