Here's a rundown of the latest city/council committee meeting regarding the philosophy behind the AIS fees. It's a manufactured crisis designed to get boats off Lake Whatcom. And, by the way, the county plans to do the same with every lake in Whatcom County.

I think the "zebra mussels" was a typo. The fact is that any boat or trailer leaving any zebra-mussel infested lake in the western US is cleaned and inspected after it's out of the water. This fact has been conveniently ignored. Also, if you check the fees for boats getting AIS permits for infected lakes, such as Tahoe and Mead, you'll see they're less than half the cost of the local fees--most are in the $20 range and go year-round; since our fees really only go from late April through October, we're paying $50 for six months, not one year.
As an Asian Clam Hunter, LK Whatcom has a bountiful supply. Unfortunately, you need to trim the beards...
