Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

I fished Silver Lake this weekend and something happened that shows how selective or picky a bass can be. I was fishing in a canal first thing in the morning and there was a small stick the was sticking up out of the water that was off shore about 15 feet. It was something that stood out from everything else so of course I flipped to it with my jig. I hit it twice and then my backseater(brian walters) hit it a few times with a jig also. No bites. We came back through about a half hour later and I again hit it with my jig and Brian threw a spinnerbait and ran it across the stick. No bites again. Just ahead was Tony and Jordan headed our way. Tony flipped to it a couple of times with a jig. No bites. Jordan followed Tony's jig up with a tube and ''THUMP"! He gets bit. It was a huge Largemouth.
That fish had been casted at somewhere around 8 times in a very short amount of time. All It took was a different bait that it had not seen a bunch of times for it to bite. I just thought it was crazy because we hit it hard with the jigs and nada!
We must have flipped ten thousand times a piece throughout the day and no fish. It makes you wonder how many fish your jig dropped in front of and they just looked at it and turned away.

KVD said this one time while fishing a tournament on the Potomac River, "If it is worth casting to one time it is worth casting to seven times."
Wise words!
Heck, when I fished tournaments in So. CA we pratically drew numbers to fish each spot. No matter where you caught a bass, you could assume the fish had already seen lures from other anglers before you. We are spoiled in Washington, and many anglers get frustrated and leave even when another angler fished along the same shoreline.

Great post - I always struggle with picking apart a spot vs giving it a look and letting it rest/come back later. This provides further insight.
Was his tube rigged up light, maybe it had to do with rate of fall like Ron talked about at the seminar, perhaps the jigs were falling to fast... just a thought.
Bass are very interesting an I have learned never to try and predict what they are gonna want becasue it will not work more that it will work. You have to adapt to them and as tough as it can be realize that it might not happen with just persistance and your favorite bait you might have to make some changes. I once sat in my boat nearly on top of a beaver hut and watched as about 6 or 7 largemouth between 2 and 6lbs swam around the boat. I was using my favorite colors of plastics mostly watermelon, and brown and they wouldn't even give it a look. So after about 20 minutes of being disgusted with myself I dug around in my bag and pulled out some really bright purple grubs. I threw one of them on my texas rig and the first cast watched one run about 3 feet to eat it. That one went about 5lbs and then 2 cast later I hooked it's twin and actually straightened my hook. That day I learned 2 things: 1) they will usually bight you just have to find the right offering and its not always old faithful or what you think should work 2) Never use cheap hooks and change them after cataching a lot of fish or fish over 5lbs! I think the purple is a dragonfly immitation and there were a lot of them flying that day?
Rate of fall different shape and some scent. Three different thing in one bait
Man, you're not kidding! After talk'n with guys, I fished some of the same docks and or stretches of water that fish came off of. My wrist still hurts from flip'n that jig so many times :-)
C-Rides original post is Silver lake in a nutshell. If you do one thing at Silver, it seems you have to fish the lightest weight possible, some baits weightless.
Anyone fishing the 2nd Open ?
I agree with Keith and Tony, I was running a 4" Boom Boom tube with a 1/8oz tungsten weight. The fall was substantially slower than a jig, with a spiraling fall. I think both of which made the difference in making that fish bite.
I TOLD YOU THERE WAS A FISH THERE!!!

Well I have to add one more thing to really confuse this. I was throwing a 3/8 jig with a large trailer and the fall i had was much slower then Chris, I also was fishing mine diffrent as in not moving mine as much or not shaking. The first time through there I did not have any rattles on and chris did. I had Smelly Jelly and Gulp spray on. Also diffrent colors. Freaking crazy fish, my guess is that, that fish had not moved up or out onto that stick untill later. But maybe that is just me trying to keep my self sane.
Thanks again Chris, had a good time and it was nice to fish with ya again.

I have been on both sides of this. I have fished right behind quality anglers in tourneys and caught fish many times. Once we fished a spot behind Ron and Marc (15 minutes later maybe) and caught about 22lbs in 40 minutes with the biggest going 5.5. Easily the highlight of my tournament career. I think that the fish just got turned on once we got one to go. The next year I was fishing by Marc and he cast to the same spot I had just fished and caught a 3lber not once but like 5 times. I couldn't catch a fish. To add insult to injury we weighed almost 23lbs six days earlier out of the same area. Easily one of the most frustrating experiences of my career. I think in that case he was doing something different than me that obviously was working better. I think it can help to show them something different and fish it either faster or slower than the last guy but don't get outside of what you are confident in doing. I can't stress that enough- be confident. If you aren't completely calm and confident you are done. Now that 6 years have gone by I can admit it, Marc destroyed my confidence that day and I couldn't execute.
Remember no two guys fish alike so do your thing the way you do it and know those fish have never seen it done that way before (except by you of course). :-)

I was also throwing a 3/8oz. jig with a big trailer for the slower fall. I also pitched a small creature bait with a tiny tungsten weight for a slow fall. It is crazy to make that many pitches with zero results!
