Washington Fishing

The Online Source for Washington Fishing Information

Just wanted everyone to know the bite is tough...

Took out one of the Soldiers from my unit and had a pretty good day but couldn't get the big ones to bite. Money is low so spent most the day fishing docks and such on the electric motor and didn't run more than 500 yards.

Water temp: 67

Water Clarity: Pretty dirty compared to past summers

Time: fished from 0800-1500 hours.

Bait fish and prey present: Bass fry, Stickleback... (dying or dead), and Blue Gill

Techniques used: Panic Minnow (new Stickle Back color), Blue gill Senko, jig, and Single Tail Grub (Watermelon), and Blue Gill/stickleback color Crankbait. Optimum Baby Line Through Swimbait (Trout color) , Didn't want to drop shot...

Techniques and patterns:

Fished for largies up shallow where cover was in close proximity to deeper water. Pitching mostly which landed 2 fish in the 2.4  lb range. Fish were in less than a foot of water and all were next to a steeper drop off to 8 foot of water. Seen 5 LM over 5lbs and hooked one for a few seconds. They were pretty spooky.

Fished spared vegetation in 6-8 foot of water with Senko. T-Rigged weightless. Caught 3 Smallmouth ranging from 1.5 to 3 lbs.

Fished vertical structure with Lead jig head in 1/8 ounce anywhere i saw dead stickle backs floating. Landed 3 smallmouths on the new stickleback color from Panic minnow and 1 one on the watermelon grub. all were in the 1-2 lb range.

Fished the swimbait over submerged grass in 6-8 foot of water with 2 LM followers in the 2-3 lb range. Water was a little dirty for the Swimbait so I gave up pretty quick.

Switched over to the medium diving crankbait for about 2 minutes in the vicinty of dead sticklebacks on rocky bank and landed a 2lb smallmouth. I think a deep diver would have worked better.

Fun day over all but no big ones to brag about... The Soldier had never even seen a Smallmouth and caught a 3 lber so made the day worth it.

I'd like to hear how some other guys and gals are doing out there right now. I didn't fish main lake at all but I typically do better size wise out there for Smallies. Hope this helps someone catch a fish.

Great report

Thanks for the report Johnny. I haven't been on Lake Wa lately, but I've heard alot of the same types of reports from friends of mine. In my opinion, it sounds like we're still experiencing some of the post spawn funk due to a late spawn and funky weather systems moving through. It's probably a combination of all of the above actually. Some stable weather for a change this year should hopefully kick them out of it.

Agreed excellent report!!

If you ever find yourselft in need of a backseater, I'll buy the gas! Would love to get out on the lake with you sometime. You know how to get ahold of me.

Thanks for the report!

Sure thing Mark...we'll definitely get out there sometime. I'll see you at the Take a Warrior Fishing event on Saturday... looks like we have 62 Soldiers and family members signed up and still finding boaters to manage all of them. We're like 5 boaters short right now I think. Should be an excellent time! Are the Rock bass biting on American yet? lol
Maybe there's some folks out here in WaFish land that are willing to come out with us and take some soldiers fishin'.........Anyone????
We will be more than willing to take anyone on Lake Washington.

Thanks for the offer and I'm sure I could arrange a smaller fishin on Lake Washington one day to take a few out... I know a bunch of soldiers who would love to go.

With that said, I talked with Willie the other night and he told me we're good to go on boaters now. That was a good thought though John. See you saturday!

So finally got the boat back last week and made it out to Washington for a fun day a fishing with the kids.

Water temp was 71 at 10am and 73.5 when we left at 4pm

Water clarity was about 8-10 ft, typical for this time of year

What was not typical for this time of year was the weed lines.  They are not fully grown in yet in alot of area's.  What should be solid heavy weedline at 17 to 20 ft was sporatic and only to 15 to 18 ft.  Cold year probable has to do with this.

Since this was a fun trip and with seafair weekend in a couple of days the lake was packed and I didn't feel like running around to alot of my water so we stayed in the east channel the whole time.  Hit 5 spots and caught fish in 4 of them.

While not specifically fishing deeper for smallies only, I pretty much stuck to weed lines to keep the perch bite up so the kids would catch alot of fish.  Spent the whole day dropshoting as this is an easy technique for them to catch fish,

Totals

8 keepers smallies with the best right at 4lbs, a 3, and the rest were 1.5 to 2 lb fish.

Tons of perch, which kept Jill and Jens busy reeling in fish all day.

Bite was pretty much a deadstick type DS bite.  They definitely didn't want it moving very much.

Mark

Good deal... sounds like a fun day. I'd love to get up there more but my 3 kids and work are taking the majority of my time for the next few weeks. Thanks for the input!
